Found one with 50,000 miles for $28,000. How bad are the transmissions on these trucks? Any other known problems? I havent owned a Chevy in 20 years.

You should be okay. Check the fluid and if it doesn't loom brand new change it. Get the new transmission fluid temp sensor with the lower setpoint and have it installed. Get the AFM plug in delete..
It has the 8 speed or 6? If it is the 8 then nvm, screw that thing.

Some had issues, some did not. It came down to the fluid type and torque converters. Like the other guy said make sure you change the fluid to the corrected one. 5.3 is bulletproof, but GM's did fight with that AFM and many including myself have it locked into full time V8. It feels like a real truck again when you do this.

transmissions are garbage, been through 3...issues didn't start until 120k miles though...bought used transmissions from a junk yard - they did have waranty's though

I have that truck in Texas Edition. 124k miles currently, and havent had a single issue with anything at all (knock on wood). Had a 2012 Tundra TSS before this and had a handful of issues, one of which would have cost me $4k to fix. So i traded it in for my current truck and have not regretted it a day since.

Hell, if you can find a 5 year old half ton truck under 30k, buy it.

How does one do this?
And are there any downsides to it?

I believe the transmissions on the 2014-2019 GMC and Chevys both have the same issues in the 8 speed. Just had to replace my transmission at 155,000 on my 2015 GMC Sierra 1500

Transmission and torque convertor is straight garbage but for that price I'd be all over it.
