2012 Louisiana Waterfowl Hunter Survey

LDWF is conducting another survey of Louisiana's waterfowl hunters asking for opinions on waterfowl hunting zones, season dates, youth hunting dates, and some questions on satisfaction with past zones/splits, satisfaction with the 2011/12 waterfowl season, and Catahoula Lake.
We put out a press release announcing the survey on Friday at:
LINK
The proposed zone boundaries for the new 3-zone options will affect hunters primarily in southeast Louisiana around Lake Pontchartrain, in the lower Atchafalaya basin, and in northwest Louisiana. But regardless of region of the state, I'd still like to get as much feedback as possible, and one goal will be to link the season date preferences with the region where the respondent primarily hunts. I was confused by past survey data on zones/splits options until I realized that about 80% of Louisiana waterfowl hunters only hunt in 1 zone. So things that are important to me, like increasing hunting opportunity and regulatory flexibility which come with additional zones, aren't very important to the vast majority of our hunters. Season dates within each zone is FAR more important.
Like the 2010 Hunter Opinion survey, we are mailing surveys to randomly-selected hunters, AND we have web-enabled the survey so every interested hunter can participate. If you weren't selected to receive the mail-out survey, you can take the web-enabled survey (it's the exact same survey) at:
LINK
At that link, you can not only find the survey, but there is also reference material that explains what we are proposing. There is a link to a power-point presentation that outlines the considerations in making decisions about zones, splits, and season dates, as well as results from past surveys. There is also a link to the maps of our current 2-zone system and 2 new 3-zone options along with precise descriptions of the zone boundaries and what we are trying to accomplish with those changes.
Agree or disagree with the proposals, I'd like to hear from you. I welcome any of your comments, but please participate with the mail-out (if selected) or on-line surveys so I can get some idea of predominant opinions in each region of the state.
Thanks very much,
Larry Reynolds

I don't know if we need to alter anything within our season, but could you tell DU to stop paying farmers to flood their corn fields instead of harvesting them. And maybe we could get them to quit putting in systems to keep the reservoirs from freezing over.
I'll just pray extra hard all off season that God provides us a 3 day streak of sub freezing temperatures next year

I do every night and unfortunately it still never happens.
ETA: I have already done the survey.

You, sir, have hit 2/3rds of the problem, as follows:
A duck needs to know three things in life.
1. How to fly south in the winder (ie, don't keep your ponds artificially unfrozen)
2. How to find food when there aint none (ie, harvest your corn/don't feed them), and lastly -
3. I am his mortal enemy (ie, there should be NO place comletely off limits to hunting, because if a duck does not fear man, the ultimate predator, he will fear no predator).
Feeding ducks, keeping things that are supposed to freeze unfrozen, and having places where a man can ride around in a truck and look at thousands of ducks sitting RIGHT next to his truck - and they won't even fly off - is taking the wild out of the wild duck.

A man does learn a few things when his first, oh, 100 or so duck hunts were in the blind of the Commander....

Some name dropping going on up in hiya.
I think the season should be pushed back a month on both ends. That's all.

Contrary to popular duck-hunter mythology, DU doesn't do those things ..... our duck-hunting brethren (and a few NWR managers) do. And if it would benefit us, we would too.
Note that "no change" is definitely one of the options in the survey, and thanks very much for your participation.

Survey done. It only takes a second fellas.

For many years we have had 60 day seasons, but it is conceivable that drought and other changes in northern production regions will reduce duck populations so that seasons are reduced to as few as 30 days. Reduced seasons may make you more interested in traveling to another zone when your preferred hunting zone is closed, because another zone would be open for a different set of days. Hunters that can move between zones would be able to hunt ducks longer than just 30 days.

Take down the nets or lower them so the ducks can fly over them to get to here.

Everytime i see that stupid frickin Duck head on a truck window in LA I puke a little.
Scrape that shite off and stick a canvasback head on top a triangle up there.
Delta Waterfowl FTMFW. Fighting the likes of DU for some time now.
