A beetle and a come along will get you anywhere you could possibly dream of going. Cut the fenders down, put some big tires on the back and those things would go through anything a 4wd pickup would go through and most of what a real jeep would go through (not what passes for a jeep today). They are rare today though....and an expensive hobby.

Very likely. The 4wd thing is a "created demand" issue that the automakers and madison avenue have been pushing for decades now so folks feel safe in their suburb. It's 90pct idiocy. What folks forget is that the brakes on all four wheels work, and that's what counts. The product is pushed because it is a huge moneymaker for the car company, the tire companies, the insurance companies, the oil company... it creates a monster chunk of revenue and profit for all above without actually selling any more cars.
Now if you're really spending a lot of time off-pavement, with a trailer, perhaps in mud, that might be a different story. You are a good candidate for 4wd. But it's probably something that's avoidable if you use your head and play it cool.
I drive a one ton 4 wd currently. I bought it when I had a 20 foot enclosed decoy trailer that I would drag across plowed fields from time to time. No way a 2wd truck would do that. Outside of occasionally surf fishing today I have no need for 4 wd. Never found a boat ramp a 2wd truck couldn't climb, even in Washington State where a state maintained boat ramp is merely a place on the river where the bank ain't a cliff. Very few people ever need a 4 wd and most of the time the reason they do is because they had it and went somewhere they ought not have gone....

I've got my 2wd ram "stuck" on a hill on my property. Wouldn't get up it, had to back up and get a little momentum.
My wife has a z71 suburban, she called me bitching her truck is stuck (after a rain in the front yard). I walk outside and she's giving it HELL in 2wd. Nothing is flat at my place so it can get slick.
She's yelling, "I thought this was 4wd!"
Yeah honey, if you put it in 4wd, pressed the button and walked right out

The new electronic lockers are pretty great. They make 2wd trucks capable and 4wd trucks very capable. The ford's with the switched electronic locker are super cool. The limited slip in my dodge seems to work pretty well.
If I didn't do western stuff occasionally, a 2wd wouldn't be a deal breaker for me anymore. If your only need is slippery boat ramps it's good stuff.

Only 2wd I will own is a classic truck. I really don’t see the point in owning a 2wd truck if you’re an outdoorsman.
If you’re an outdoorsman and own a 2wd drive truck it like buying a 2wd jeep wrangler.

I drive a 4WD. Typically only helps if I made a bad decision to start with.

Then you need to get out more.
