Climber in a pine thicket about 100 yards off of a shooting lane.

Hoyt RX8 Ultra

The quadrupeds seem to have disappeared over the last week. Not much deer or hog activity on camera.

Last hunt of the year for me.

Area 2 Public
Same spot as last time
Mathews V3X
Tuffhead Evolution 2.0 broadheads

A buck came in at 6:40 and meandered around at about 60 yards. He slowly came my way, but then 7 does came in under me so I had to be really careful. At 7:30, the buck finally gave me a shot but he was walking pretty quickly and I couldn’t stop him. Arrow hit further back around the hip.

Wasn’t expecting much but found good blood. Waited 2 hours and slowly tracked. I found 2 bedding sites and backed out. I didn’t want to push him. Waiting on a dog now. Man I hope we find him. I believe it’s the 8-point I let walk the other day. He isn’t a monster but he’ll be my biggest buck yet if we find him.

This is only my 5th season hunting, but I’ve been having some good luck! I hope it didn’t run out.

The best outcome is you hit the femoral artery. That didn’t happen, as the buck would’ve been dead quickly. Probably a gut shot. It seems a hit far back in the guts takes longer for the deer to die. Good luck and post a pic when you find him.

I agree. His 2 bedding sites were 35 yards apart. He wants to lay down so I’m giving him lots of time. Dog is 15 minutes out, and I believe 7 hours should be enough.

Hopefully you find him but either way enjoy watching the dog work. It is really awesome watching them track.

I have the whole family hunting this evening on 4 stands across our property.
It will probably be the last time we do this for the season and definitely enjoy it.
Good luck yall

Good luck in the recovery and congrats. Backing out was the right thing. He will be laying dead not far.

Just got home. What a day! The dog, Trigger, was awesome. He wanted to go after something right on the main trail, but the handler wanted to let him go to the last blood first. As soon as we got to the last blood, Trigger shot off back to the original spot he liked.

We followed him and saw drops of blood most of the way. We found my arrow fully intact and it went deeper than I thought. Then, right off the trail we saw the buck get up and Trigger darted after him. That buck was watching us go down that trail. The buck went into a pond and Trigger got ahold of him. No clear shot since I wasn’t about to take a chance hurting the dog.

The buck left the water and laid down. Trigger grabbed a leg just to make sure he didn’t go anywhere. I put the finishing shot in him right there.

I took a look to see where my initial hit went. That first shot went through the hind leg and into the gut. He would have died eventually, but it’s questionable whether or not I would have found him the next day before coyotes did. Trigger saved the day.

I love seeing deer recovered by a dog. How far did he go? Fine buck for sure.
