re: Worst. Olympics. Ever.

is that big cities in fully developed countries are on to the IOC con and the idea that hosting the Olympics loses money.
Denver figured this out in 1976. After being awarded the games, the voters revolted against the shakedown and told the IOC to take a hike. Why they hate America!

They’re allowed to hate on Russia. Just not China.

Your shitty country banned South Park for making fun of the CCP and fat frick Xi.

It's not man made snow that's at issue...it's the fact that there's not much measurable winter precipitation in that region. It's fricked up to put the winter games in a city where it doesn't snow.
It snowed pretty hard at some of the Alpine events.

So why did you enjoy Vancouver? Vancouver gets about 2” snow in February and 2.5” for January
So that argument isn’t solid.

I’m gonna go ahead and say it, I hate it because it’s in China after they released Covid-19 and lied about everything to do with it. Now they won’t allow live fans and have service people in hazmat suits.
Add to the fact that they didn’t ban Russia and then caught them cheating again, and STILL DIDNT BAN THEM.

That’s an argument that is legitimate and was worthy of discussing. I agree the Covid issue should have been addressed and probably taken away. Problem is nowhere else was ready.

Time difference. Too late to watch it live. We already know results before the replays.

Are any of the facilities would be up to what an old "normal" was for the Olympics? No, but I think any of them could have worked with the same attendee restrictions. The crowd of athletes allowed into the hockey games would have fit comfortably in Lake Placid and if they wanted fans everywhere else could use the city's NHL facility. (The traditional events would have been the best ever with all the snow in Lake Placquote. They went to Beijing because of the reuse of the '08 infrastructure so it would be a fiscal slap on the wrist to the government.
It would have taken a mammoth effort and I think these games would have been pushed to 2023 if not for NBC (they recovered their losses from the Tokyo postponement by the cost savings of just moving straight from summer to winter sites.) The IOC tries to stay out of overt political statements but this is just as much a statement about humanity and what their lax lab standards have done to our world. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if the tape delayed closing ceremony broadcast gets preempted with coverage of Ukraine under attack... waiting until after the Olympics may be the one thing you can say was good coming out of the 16 days.
ETA: I did not intend to write a block of text but it underscores just how complex the issue was for them. The easiest solution was to stick with the status quo.

They need to adjust the medal counts. If you have soccer, every starting player on the winning teams should receive a medal and those should count towards the total. Winning at ice hockey should not be equal to the skeleton bobsled.

You guys make me laugh thinking IOC an US pet dog and IOC will do whatever US ask it to do, relocate the game etc. You even list the cities that can host the games.
30 years ago IOC is US pet dog. In the past 15 years, US and Western Countries lost control of IOC, UN. WTO and WHO. US tell UN head do not go to Beijing. He ignored US. WTO head was a torch bearer in Beijing too.
US is the founding countries of almost all of these organizations. If US can still control these organizations, Trump will not back out from these organizations. Trump was mad because US is paying most of the money but majority of the votes are against US orders.
The only international organization China does not have upper hand is UN Human Rights Council. Even this organization refuse US request to publish the "Xinjiang Human Report" before Beijing Olympic.
IOC does not want make US too crazy since American companies are the bigger sponsors. So it speaks the Olympic political neutral bs.
But everyone knows Olympic is a political game otherwise you will not be mad at Eileen Gu.

If NBC and in years past CBS and ABC doesn't provide TV money for the Olympics the Games are dead. Like it or not the USA provides the financial support that allows the Olympics to happen.
Go ahead and have the Chinese provide all the funding for this and nobody will give a crap and the Games will die.
The Games are Western games, Europe and North America. That's just the way it is.

You are correct. IOC needs NBC and American companies' money. That is why IOC does not want to drive US crazy. That is why IOC is using Sports Not Politics to make sure US is keeping its face. Everyone has stairs to get down.
The US TV rating down is a concern. IOC will try to make NBC happy. There is a rumor 2034 Winter Olympic will come to Salt Lake City so NBC will renew the contract.

You forgot France is the founding country of modern Olympic. The official languages are French and English. The Olympic is a good tool for France in the world stage.
That is why when US started the Boycott, French shot down the idea immediately. China is 1/3 of German auto market. Without France and Germany, US does not carry Europe as it used to do.
Look at the countries that follow US boycott the Olympic: North America (Canada and US), Australia, UK and a few small countries.

Winter Olympics should be held in Scandinavia, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, France... places where the the sports are beloved and in the Western Hemisphere.
They were always the "small Olympics" (I mean fricking Lake Placid hosted the Olympics not too long ago) but the greedy IOC sold out and tried to make Northern European disciplines a global anywhere event to the highest biddder.

Usually I watch a lot of Olympic coverage.
I've watched about 1 hour of these winter games. And not a single family member or friend I know is watching either.
I've never been less interested in the Olympics. No crowds. No compelling stories. Time difference.
And most importantly being in one of the worst most disgusting and undeserving countries in the world.
