Should both lose their US citizenships.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Both of them choosing the athletic program that supplies them with the most money, facilities, resources is the most American thing to do.

No, but they should be banned from training in the US.

What does the location matter if they aren't using coaches provided by the country they are in's Olympic federation?

A lot of resources go into training. She's welcome to use American coaches, but she can do it from shithole China and those coaches can live there with her. They don't get to enjoy the relative freedoms and luxury of America. They wanna represent China, they can enjoy the communist control living there as well.

This. Rep the country you want, with their resources.

Not really. Both Mondo and Gu just do their sport. They don't have day jobs between the games. Training for this is all they do and their countries pay them millions to focus on nothing but that.
The rub on Gu is that she does all of it in the US enjoying US freedoms and luxury while taking commy money to represent them

Well in Gu's case 4 years ago the government could use the "power of the purse" to make her collaborators' lives uncomfortable. Put a clause in their federal grants that makes the institution ineligible if they use any of it in a way that benefits an athlete who:
- Has graduated from an American HS or who has lived in the US for more than half of the previous 10 years; AND
- Elect to compete for any other country (Territories excluded ex. Puerto Rico); AND
- Receives more than $500,000 (excluding NCAA NIL) from sponsors outside of North America.
- The same applies to universities that employ birthright US citizens who accept coaching positions with foreign national federations or paid positions through the foreign athlete.
This keeps the bar low for college sports but prevents gaming the system the way the CCP and Gu's mom have done. In Gu's case this would have stripped Stanford of all federal financial aid and all Stanford coaches would essentially be blacklisted. It doesn't hurt the foreign college kids since they can not access USOC facilities.
I don't have a problem with Pierre from Grenoble (who is a scholarship worthy athlete at a US school) coming here for his college years but that's it. If he stays here past his 4/5 years of eligibility all support disappears unless he is in the process of obtaining citizenship/renouncing his birth country's citizenship. (If the coach continues without those steps being taken, blacklist and issue a show cause to access US facilities for 5 years.)
It's harsh but the only way we are going to stop letting the world freeload on programs supported by our country. Throw up an athletic iron curtain and watch the US resume dominating the Olympics once again.

Mondo's reason to represent Sweden is that the USA has trials to make the Olympic team, so if you have one bad day, you don't even make the team.
Meanwhile, Sweden has a committee that picks who they want to represent them in the Olympics, which is the person that is the best - not just on one particular days - but basically who has been the best for the last 2 or more years.
I don't know anything about Gu's reason.
I have more of a problem with the Olympians who are representing the USA, then complain about the Country at each and every interview.
