OT Oilfield Insiders:
Did the Horizon BOP definitely have a deadman control?
Would a BOP deadman ever be intentionally disabled on a drilling rig?

Related to the actual accident, someone today told me that the 11 on the floor knew something was wrong and that they were trying to fix it rather than running and that actually saved the lives of the other 115.
I am sure they knew something was up. I am sure they were trying to engage the blow out preventer. But a blow out is a blow out and their actions if successful and had engaged the preventer may have saved the well. But if unsuccessful most likely did not save anyone.
We all like to think that when we lose people like this they died saving lives. The guys are heroes in their own right, but their actions most likely did not save everyone else.
Im sure they did the best they could. Its a sad situation.

If your on the floor and the well starts blowing out not much you can do but shut in the well with the BOP.

Every place on the north gulf coast will be affected if it takes 90 days to fix it. Its a really fricked up situation and very irresponsible of the parties involved to not have enough safety checks in place to prevent a continous 3 month oil spill.

if it goes any farther west its going to get caught in the MS River current. if you think its bad now just wait. The whole Barataria(sp?) Bay is gonna get fricked. the MS river currents w/ a south east wind will push the oil right into grand isle and all along our coast.

which is why i said holly beach will be the new grand isle

but if it gets over there the MS river current will take it all along the coast. the gulf current runs from east to west too. i've seen numerous models on the currents in this area. thats why hypoxia is so bad in that area of the gulf. nutrients from the MS river get carried over there by the currents of the river and gulf
