Live Science

quote:

The battle plan is simple: Open the floodgates on the Mississippi River leg that runs through New Orleans and the rushing water will block the BP Deepwater Horizon oil gusher from harming the delta wetlands further

quote:

The plan, backed by researchers at LSU and the National Audubon Society, calls for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to open concrete gates built within the river's levees about 315 miles (507 kilometers) upriver from the Gulf of Mexico. In theory, this would release enough water to wash away the gunk that is approaching from the Gulf. The extra flow could also flush out the oil that has reached coastal wetlands such as the Wax Lake Delta at the mouth of the Mississippi

Sounds like a good idea. However, it will take 20 years to get approval from all the federal agencies.

This plan has been is being studied by the Army Corps of Engineers. They have been watching river stages and running scenarios through in Vicksburg since the early days of the spill.

From what I understand its at the old River control structure. 70% of flow is diverted to Mississippi and 30% to Atchafalaya.

They would like to boost the percentage to 81% to Mississippi and 19% for Atchafalaya.

Not to mention, the extra sediment would help the marshes with a little more substinance

They need to open the gates to the maximum safe levels and leave them like that IMO. We can't get enough fresh water into the estuaries.

This is a big public misconception... The only marshes "helped" would be the ones below Venice where there are no levees. There are no conveyance channels above that point on the western side of The river, so the entire Barataria basin still wouldn't receive sediment or freshwater to flush out oil.

We have to cut some diversion channels through along the westbank from Belle Chasse down at strategic locations to get the rebuilding effect desired.
