I'm not sure what they're doing but they've been dicking around with that small pipe for a few hours now. Looks like they're having trouble getting it loose. They were cutting on it a while ago and then when they got almost all the way through it, they stopped for some reason.

I agree. Doesn't look like they have made much, if any progress since the last time I looked.

What the hell are you gonna listen to in 5000' of water?

Pretty amazing what they are able to do with these ROVs. I'm not sure but I wonder if those are the smaller choke and kill lines that are being cut off? Looks like they got the first one. The second one is being cut several inches below where the first one was cut. Also looks like the diameter of the circular saw isn't quite big enough or the ROV arm is contacting the riser flange so they have it about 90% cut but can't get the last bit cut due to interference with the riser flange. I saw where they tried to use the ROV arm and thrust to try to get the metal to bend off and break. Pretty amazing stuff.
I believe it is going to get very messy with seeing what they will be cutting once they start cutting the main riser. Oil / gas will cloudy up the vision field.

OK Stupid question. I know we have some knowledgeable folks here so maybe you can help with this . They knew there was a chance top kill would not work. They knew cutting the riser and capping it was the next thing to try. They had a ROV sitting there looking at this riser for a week. Why wouldn't they have already cut these choke and kill lines

That's my take as well paulie. Looked like the diameter of the saw blade was just a hair short. I wonder if it originally was big enough but wear on the blade left it just a millimeter too small.
My understanding of the cut to be made on the riser pipe itself is that the diamond wire cutter will be clamped to the bottom end of the riser. Once they get through the pipe wall, hell is going to break loose as oil/mud/whatever flows out of the cut. But since it's clamped to the pipe, they don't really need to see. They will just keep going until they cut all the way through.

Maybe because they needed them during the top kill? Or because they wanted that ROV to keep its eyes on the leaks and plume? I don't really know but the fact that they didn't indicates that they probably had a good reason.

Needed em for top kill operations.

i am glad to see duct tape making an appearance

Are you assuming that everything they are doing is the best course of action ? I seriously doubt that upstream of the BOP where they were injecting Top Kill these lines mattered. They were already leaking like crazy.I think this was just another oversight.

Ok Judge you seem to know your shite so if you say they needed them for Top kill, I believe you and that would be a viable explanation. However there have been endless oversights , ommissions , errors etc that are just part of BP's culture . Would not surprise me at all if they made another at this critical juncture.

Dunno, they were lowering that big thing (anyone have an idea what it was?) and then oil fogs up the screen real good...
