I was puzzled by why they were cutting vertically, but cutting junk away makes sense.

yeah, i thought i read it would be more of a "clip" like that...kinda like a bolt cutter...

They're going to use the shear for the other cut. The one at the top of the LMRP needs to be a very smooth cut that leaves the pipe round. The shear would bend the shite out of the pipe and I'm not sure they could get it in that space anyway. So that's where the diamond wire cutter comes into play.

hopefully these guys can pull this one off and at least reduce the flow....this is pretty scary with the warning that it will get worse before possibly getting better....

Well, they got that piece off.
Posted on 5/31/10 at 11:29 am to MountainTiger
Definitely gonna get worse. Hopefully, they've carefully planned out and rehearsed what needs to be done after the pipe is cut.

Don't know if any of you are old enough to remember the moon landings but this kind of reminds me of that.

Armstrong took those first steps on the moon a week before I left to go to Nam.
This footage is eerily similar.

Not much going on right now Judge. About an hour ago, one of the ROVs cut something off of the riser pipe. It looked like a couple of ears or handles that were held to the pipe by a strap. The ROV cut through the strap, removed the "ears", carried them away, and put them down. Since then, not much that I've seen but I've only been checking from time to time.

Just before that they cut off a pipe (4in?) that ran alongside the riser. And just before that the camera at the end of the riser showed a huge change in the plume coming out of the end before returning to normal after a couple of minutes.

Burp of gas? Maybe they have pulled down the gas oil contact enough that well get more gas and less oil. A gut can dream.

Make that guy not gut. Or guy with gut more accurately.

If you have an iPhone you can download the Ustream app and watch it there.
