on the bp site rov camera it is typed on the screen "deploying mud mats"

It has to be a mat to keep something heavy from sinking into the mud on the sea floor. That's all I can think of.

Maybe they want something to set the LMRP cap on if they need to stand down from the first attempt and have to recut the riser. That would be my guess. That is a lot easier, and safer, than hoisting it back up to surface.

If a hurricane or tropical storm approaches this area. What do the rigs drilling relief wells do? If they move off site how do the disconnect from the well?

they will get out of the way. the well will be suspended in a variety of ways depending upon what stage they are in. there's a variety of suspension tools made just for this. tools like "emergency hangoff tools" that are supplied by the wellhead vendor, or tools like "storm packers" from halliburton or other third party companies.

when the suspension is complete, the blind shear rams will be closed. that will give at least 2 barriers of well control installed. at that point, the lower marine riser package will be disconnected and it will be recovered to surface along w/ the riser.

Nicely stated.

Do you know if they usually set a cement plug when they do a temporary abandonment for storms?

it depends on what the situation w/ the well is -- how much open hole is there, is there any oil/gas exposed, how long you expect to be away from the well (are you suspending for a hurricane or for some type of long term repair situation).

for example, i'd imagine most of the rigs suspending wells currently being drilled in accordance w/ the moratorium are setting cement plugs since they'll be away for several months.

You got any thoughts on why they did not clog up something?

Internals of the BOP are mmessed up and the kink would not stop the junk all the way across. Don't understand the internals. That is all I can offer.

Turns out the Feds, not BP,pulled the plug on top kill:

"Browner said on CBS that Energy Secretary Steven Chu and a team of scientists on Saturday essentially put a halt to BP's attempt to cap the spewing well with a process known as "top kill," which injected drilling mud and other materials to try to counter the upward pressure of the oil. The administration team worried the increasing pressure from injecting heavy drilling mud could worsen the leak."

Is anyone watching the ROV cam right now? It looks like a fire is burning at the end of the pipe? Optical Illusion?

I know nothing about oil flow, but might that be gasses?

I think that it is just more gas, no fire. The percentage of gas to oil varies.

It was some part of the riser I think.

Looks to me like they have a rotary saw and are trying to cut away some of the junk (for lack of a better word) that is around the riser. I would assume this is being done so that they can get at the riser better.
