Yeah but you would think those arms would be a little more fluid and a lot less like the damn claw machine in the video arcade.

Should have used some duct tape to secure the saw.

Seems to be struggling to hod it. It think it broke.

ok. just thought about it. it can't be that they are gonna pump inside the choke right there to seal the leak because that line doesn't enter the annulus. just runs parellel to the riser. they are obviously getting ready to pull the riser adapter off of the stack for one of two reasons:
1- getting ready to sit another bop on top
2- getting rid of the riser so that they can place the top hat on top of the bop.

guys, I gotta run..... ya'll have a great day.

either way, this is not part of the top kill procedure. you can probably classify that as
A FAILURE.
A FAILURE.

So junk shot is too then?

apparently. they are obviously trying to remove the choke/kill hoses off of the riser adapter. this means that they are going to remove the adapter.
you see, the riser is hooked up to the adapter. the adapter is hooked up to the bop. essentially, the riser adapter is kinda like the first jt. of riser. it gets more difficult than that but for the most part i'll keep it simple.

Looks like they are doing a dry run to help planning to saw cut off the riser.
I think they are getting prepared for the top hat and LMRP in th enear future (next couple days).

Could just be prep for all that if junk shot doesn't work!?!?

The BP COO said last night if the Top Kill failed their next step is to install a LMRP? package on top of the removed riser. This new device will have some sort of seal and a riser to get the oil / gas to the surface. The seal will not be a tight - pressure seal though. If that doesn't work then another BOP. He said it would be impractical to continue to just pump mud to reduce the leak until the relief well is drilled.
Yes it seems to appear that the Top Kill isn't working as they expected. Too many losses through the leaks which makes it practically impossible to generate enough pressure to get down the well.

Looks like they're bringing the ROV back up.

Paulie, I just off the phone w/my contact and he pretty much said what you wrote.

Yep, and we get into a "riskier" operation by removing the kinked riser which may be restricting the flow somewhat. On the other hand, removing the damaged riser will give them direct access to the leak source at one point instead of multiple points. This will be interesting to see what happens.

Hopefully the BOP stack may have some of the gates partially closed and that is where most of the pressure drop is occurring. So removing the riser may not be as "risky" as aforementioned but I guess nobody really knows for sure!
I do like the idea of getting the leak down to one source point instead of multiple points.

Question to experts in hydraulics/oil industry.
I used to be in hydraulics repair a long time ago for extra $.
I know there are very strong clamps/vice type hydraulic devises.
Why can't they use a huge pinching clamp type device to squeeze the riser together like you would a garden hose?
It might not totally shut off the flow, but it sure would help build backpressure which would allow the pumped mud a better chance of being forced down the well.
I would definitely try to crimp it in sections that are before the other leaks to test the theory. If you break or cut it, so what, its leaking anyway.
