A) it would blow out of the riser
yes

B) It might prevent them from placing a new BOP on top of the old one
possibly

C) I dont think it will matter or anything will work untill more resistance is provided on the riser end.
definitely

D) and most likely I dont have a clue.
sounds like you have a grasp on it
cementing is tricky enough under proper pressure and pumping situations. this is an almost impossible cementing situation. cementing failure is a major cause of well control issues even on the best days

If I got it right than it truly is credited to this thread mostly. I am in Real estate/Construction but dont know Jack about drilling except what I've been reading here and there since this thing started.

Admittedly stupid question but seeking a serious response:
I saw in one thread that someone said they should just send a huge depth charge down there to blow up the whole apparatus and collapse the hole, and everything along with it. Basically use the earth/seabed to collapse the drill hole and plug the whole thing. To a complete outsider like myself, that makes some sense. Why is that not an option?

Ok folks been away for awhile . Has the Top kill failed ? are they moving on to others options?
Posted on 5/28/10 at 11:14 pm to BenHOGan
I'd guess that it would be a difficult thing to control.

1. I think you would just crater it. You have a little hole spewing oil. You would then have a big hole spewing oil.
2. How you gonna spot the charge through the flow?
3. The BOP is holding back some flow. They don't want to make it worse.
It is the first rule of holes. When you are in one, stop digging.

Not officially. Saying it may be Sunday before they know for sure whether it has worked or not.

what if they blow the hole up and make the rupture even bigger? then what?
when they use controlled charges to put out a blow out on land it is to extinguish the fire so they can cap it. blowing up the BOP could open a fracture that exposes the hole completely and allows the well to unload unfettered. Dont discount the strength of the formation pressure of the well. it is not a safe bet that the well would "collapse."
it could be the equivalent of taking a steady bleeding puncture wound in your warm and using a saw to rip it open causing it to bleed uncontrollably

What is the white thing in the video? Is that the riser spewing oil/mud/whatever??? The rov/robot arm is moving it around ... why????

Big white thing in the middle is the bent over riser. It is spewing gas/oil/mud probably. The robert arm is not moving it. The robot arm is grabbing it to anchor the rov to it.

"President Barack Obama, in Louisiana, said Energy Secretary Steven Chu will work with BP to seek alternatives if the top- kill plan fails."
That is not realistic. Secretary Chu is a physicist and a very smart man. But Thibodeaux the toolpusher knows more about this than Chu could learn after studying it for six months.

Have to say I'm pretty DAMN sure that Thib would agree with you ... 100%.

I wonder what the recipe was of the mud they sent down hole?
I wonder if they thought of adding a lot of LCM to help with killing this thing?

Is the main leak right at the top of the BOP where it is bent or further down the riser? I cant find an up to date graphic

fwiw. "a relative of mine" works at wildlife and fisheries and they were telling them yesterday that it has worked, the leak stopped for now but they're going to wait till sunday to make sure it worked before telling the g.p.
fwiw...

I think your relative might want to seek a second opinion.
