Just catching up with today's progress or lack thereof....
This has got to be one of the biggest cluster eff fails of all time but I'm going to try to stay positive about it.
A lot of talented minds and skilled personnel working endless and exhausting hours to figure out how to stop this thing from leaking.
Going back to the Top Hat sounds like a desperate measure just to do something. It will still leak because of the "loose" fit. Hydrate formation? Who knows? Maybe the leaking oil out of the loose fit will prohibit that. Another gamble, but everyone realizes there is no easy solution.
Does the technology not exist just to unbolt the damaged riser from the top of the BOP? How to they remove the bottom bolts of the BOP to the wellhead prior to bringing a well into production?
At one point BP was discussing adding a second BOP on top of the first one so unbolting the flange must be an option. I haven't heard this discussed by BP as of late.
Sorry for the rant..... Just frustrated like everyone else.

Check BP feed right now not cnn.

i cant figure out what it is they are spraying, maybe they can freeze the pipe like Arnold did to the liquid metal terminator in T2 and then shatter it.

What do you think they are spraying on the riser? and why?
Probably dispersant.

you would think maybe they could cut the bolts if they cant undo them

Posted this in another thread, by why couldn't they make so many very large containers (+10000 barrels), sink them to the bottom where the oil fills them up. they then float to the top to be unloaded. Why wouldn't this work?

Yes! Cutting the bolts with the circular saw has got to be an option.
The problem they may be thinking with unbolting / cutting the bolts is that then the leak from the loose flange will be below where they are working and visibility goes to zilch.

its probably outputting way faster then they could fill them

In addition to this think about the pressure from below as you loosen or cut each bolt. It would tilt or bind as you did that. Maybe you could somehow clamp the flanges together as you cut or unbolted them. IDK bunch of smart guys can't figure this out. Sad and frustrating .

You could probably take out one bolt at a time (a technique called "hotbolting") without making the flange leak. Maybe replace each bolt, one at a time with something else that is easier to remove after all the bolts are replaced but I'm drawing a blank here.

I don't have the proceedure either but apparently BP does because it is part of the piggybacked BOP plan.

This decision to go back to the top hat really makes no sense. It seems like someone new started making the calls.

Just checked out all 12 ROV's . The 2 from Skandi appear to be spraying dispersant . The Enterprise ROV's are hanging out by the TOP HATS . Everything else seems to be idling. Action must all be topside.

riser hooked up to the cap/dome/top hat thing.

Because by the time you had them built, the relief well would be there, IMHO. That is one hell of a lot of steel. 10,000 barrels is 440,000 gallons. I think that is about 60,000 cubic feet. That is one big arse tank.

Maybe you were thinking of some type of bladder. Again, I think it would have to be huge, and how would you control the 10,000 barrel beach ball that you would have when it hit the surface? Anything you try to grapple it with would rupture it.
