ROV just let go of the shear straps which it has been holding for hours. Might be close to some real action.

shite!!! The more I watch this the more I think the shears were the right choice and the more it looks like some kind of bad as battle/Armageddon.

Looked like they were moving shears in from the right. Visibility is a real issue here.

I hope the diameter of the Top Hat accounts for the oblong diameter of the vertical riser that will be sheared. They are going to have to make it fit over the open pipe to minimize hydrate formation I think. Also the leak rate will still be pretty bad without a tight seal. I don't see why they couldn't be doing the Diamond Wire Saw at the same time (at least have it cutting) while these other plans are going on.

Listening to WWL radio 870 am right now and they said the Coast Guard (Thad Allen) made the call to abandon the Diamond Wire Saw method. This may have come from his superiors which is the White House. A lot of speculation but interesting.

I would like to see Thib the Toolpusher debate Chu. Salazar, and Allan on this one.

I would think that once the shear cuts the riser that the saw could be used to make the clean cut.
Though they may still have binding issues with the casing and drill pipe rattling around inside.

Watch the current indicator on the Intervention III ROV 2. It is pretty high tech: A rope with a knot tied in the top. Once again, Thib the Toolpusher and Richard the ROV driver show how they do things old school in the oil patch!

Anyway, it is going crazy, showing extremely turbulent flow near the top of the BOPs.
