The Obama administration has asked oil giant BP to stop work on a project meant to choke off the flow of oil spewing from its broken well in the Gulf of Mexico until the company answers questions from government scientists.

Sounds like they want BP to answer the stupid internet rumors that a tsunami is going to happen if they plug the well. Stupid.

I know the tsunami thing might be far fetched, but would you put your childs life on the line that nothing bad will happend?

But the term "government scientists" is flat out scary. Who the frick are they?

Really, at this point, I surely don't trust Obama EVER, but I"m not drinking the BP Koolaide for sure!

Do you want this think to keep leaking for another day based on a kooky internet rumor?

I would imagine that BP is already employing the top scientists in the field. I'd trust them before I'd trust our government.

Not sure why BP hasn't moved the Enterprise over the well?? If they did then all the oil would be recovered.

I'm guessing there was a lack of communication as to how long this would take. This delay has caused probably 50K bbls of oil to be spilled.

I know that I will be in trouble, but I just ripped off an e-mail to the Idiot In Chief about this act of stupidity.

What will another few million gallons of oil hurt, right Mr. Prez? It will give the eco-loons more ammo for when they demand a permanent halt to all deepwater drilling ops in the US.

I want to know why they come up with these questions now? They have had 3 months to ask them. So why at the last minute do you decide you have a problem with this?

I'm not sure why they haven't moved The Enterprise back over the well to capture the oil. Seems like if they did then the majority, if not ALL, the oil would be contained bewteen the Enterprise, Q, and HP1

Isn't this riser supposed to be more " permanent", allowing quicker connect/disconnect for retreat in advance of Hurricannes. I think they should hook up the production vessel. If it can produce 100% and not spill, they can take their time testing and choking back.

ETA: Feel free to email my suggestion forward, Steve.

Sid, which production vessel are you referring to? I don't think any one of them by itself has the capacity to produce all of the oil that is leaking. It's going to take the combination of 3 or 4 of them to handle it all. Seems like the Enterprise + Helix + Q4000 ought to be able to handle it though. Why don't they move in the Enterprise? I don't know. Must be more complicated than that. By the time they get it in place maybe they've already started the integrity test.

I'm thinking more that BP did not expect this extended amount of time to analyze the data so they were caught with their pants down. The stacking cap has been landed for over 36 hrs.

True but they'd also have to install the new top hat (#7) and (maybe) run riser down to it. I could see that taking a day or more to accomplish.
