I’m not saying this is only a big thing in Louisiana but damn it’s way more common in various places there than just other states in my experience. It’s not even about being poor or rich either. It’s culturally acceptable by many folks there. IN MY EXPERIENCE.

that's kept soccer mom 101 where I live and I think it's spawned a cottage industry, there's a million little ding repair businesses around here, I just bought a new vehicle and one of the extended warranties offered was a scratch and dent coverage

I always find one of the corrals to park next to even if its one of the further away ones. Because no one is bringing their shite back to ding your car by the cart corral.
