Busy arse week - 4k miles driven, lots of deliveries including a load that had me right at 79,975k lbs gross. Paper rolls out of Bogalusa going to a TP manufacturer in NC. Got a load of TP and had 3 stops in Ohio and Michigan, then sent over to eastern PA, then made my way back across to western Nebraska.
One thing I want to point out is the shittiness of some of these state governments for shutting down their rest areas, especially Pennsylvania. There's not a lot of parking as is going from PA/MD/WV/VA to the northeast - so every parking spot is vital to running freight in and out of the northeast. Without warning this week that assbag decided to completely shutdown the rest areas not on the turnpike, and for the ones on the turnpike they closed the facilities and set up portapotties under the guise of "protecting against the spread of the China Virus. My question was, how does this stop the spread? If someone who is infected uses the portapotty, their germs are all over the handles - thus contaminating it for everyone behind them. If they have regular cleaning schedule of the interior facilities, not only does it disinfect the surfaces, but it also keeps people healthy AND keeps people working. That big dumb dumb didn't think it through and got an extremely large pushback from the industry, social media, and I'm pretty sure the Trump administration got involved with those dumbasses - they wound up reopening the rest areas and the turnpike facilities. I was supposed to take an insulation load from Indianapolis to Camden NJ but I turned it down because it was going to have to go across the turnpike and there would have been nowhere to park or use the bathroom in a safe clean environment.
My company subcontracts to help run freight for some Walmart Distribution Centers so I'm going to be doing that for a few weeks it seems. Basically from Denver to Liberal, KS to Omaha and north to the Canadian border. They're overwhelmed by everything so I'm all about helping them out - I was up here last year for the Nebraska spring flood and was borderline exhausted after a few weeks from driving so much.
I've got my elderly parents back home so I can't risk going home anytime soon until they get a vaccine, cure, or testing pretty much on demand. I will likely be out on the road for the next couple of months. It's freakin crazy seeing how empty the roads are - friend of mine drove from Boston MA to Richmond VA this week and said he barely stopped the whole way.
Yall stay safe down south. I hope nobody on here or your family gets sick, baws. Be good, and if you can spare some - toss a trucker some hand sanitizer. Most of us don't have any! I'm using a couple of bottles of soap i found at a DG in Commerce, GA and a bunch of gallons of water to keep my hands cleaned anytime I'm out of the truck, but I'm afraid I may not find more for a while.

That’s a good OP. I’ve always liked driving long distances and in another life I’d have been a trucker.

You're a big hero. As big a hero as anybody who landed on the Normandy beaches.

Friend,
What’s your handle on the CB?
Listen for me. I go by TulaneLSU in New Orleans. A neighbor gave me his old Cobra 25 LTD from RadioShack. I built my own home antennae to 16 feet. On a clear night I’ve talked to people claiming to be in DC.
Drive safely and remember, the left lane is for passing and should be used sparingly. If you can’t pass someone within 60 seconds, don’t try to pass them.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

My question was, how does this stop the spread?
Well most restrooms in my travels across the country don't have toilet lids and many have automatic flushing.
With the potential for virus particles to become an aerosol, (we do know that the virus has been found in feces, but there is a question as to whether it is viable), it's a risk factor. Also, they tend to have air dryers for drying hands, which can be a risk as well if there is till virus on the hand being dried.
Imagine if some cluster of people get infected from someone's poo or someone who didn't wash their hands well AND are traveling wide. That's a big amount of trouble.
Presumably, germs on the porta-potty handles can be washed away before someone touches a mucus membrane?

Hell no. I will say this though - the outpouring of support has given some people in this industry a bad case of hero complex. I'm just doing my job and trying to stay healthy - it is nice that people are starting to wake up to how vital this industry is though.

I sit on the easy side of trucking, and y’all are the unsung heroes in today’s world. Every trucks going balls to the wall. Thank you Horsemeat!
ETA: Appreciate your service with while we were hurting this time last year. Would love to pay for a steak dinner one of the times you are passing through Omaha
