When I started out, I was no expert, I just knew quality, and learned on the way. I spent many of hours searching sold items of eBay, looking at prices.

When I would buy something, I would search similar items.
Gotcha.

Damn smartphones have turned everyone into an "expert" now.

But you have to recognize the quality first. For instance, the pool cues I paid $100 for and sold for $378. It was after 10am when I got to the sale. I'm sure 100+ people saw those cues and passed on them. When she told me $100 for all three, I didn't bat an eye or negotiate. I just said "Sold".

Jesus, read this.
quote:

Only 24 copies were made of the original Declaration of Independence, and one of them wound up accidentally in the hands of a Pennsylvania bargain hunter in 1991. The anonymous man purchased a painting for $4 at a thrift shop because he liked the frame. Imagine his surprise when he removed the painting to find a pristine, first-printing copy of the Declaration hiding behind it. The document sold for 2.4 million dollars.

And this
quote:

Zach Norris (who has been confirmed as not Action Bronson) went into a Phoenix Goodwill looking for a golf bag. What he found instead was this watch. He recognized the brand name, LeCoultre, and bought it for six dollars. Turns out it was a vintage 1959 LeCoultre Deep Sea Alarm, which he sold online this year for $35,000. That money can buy a lot of golf bags.

At the St Vincent de Paul store in New Orleans, some one bought a vase for $1, it was some rare artist, worth $25,000 (or something).

Things on my wish list to find in the wild one day:

Newcomb College pottery
Tiffany jewelry
1st gen GI Joe
1st year Hot Wheels
Hunter S Thompson signed book
Clemetine Hunter painting
George Rodrigue painting

I did find a Newcomb College vase one time. I offered $1500, but they turned it down.

I remember seeing a show on this find, maybe on the History Channel (not American Pickers or Pawn Stars).

Another great buy I got one time. All the estate sale companies knew I was the BR toy expert. One company called me to price a large lot. I get there and she has 100+ pieces of 1st Gen 3 3/4" GI Joes and Transformers. It was a ton of shite and I knew it would take me hours to sort it all out, put correct weapons/equipment with the Joe. Plus there were about 30 GI Joe vehicles including the aircraft carrier.

I offer her $800 for it all but she says she already advertised them. So I spent at least 20 hours getting it all together and finding the prices. The total came out to about $1250. After two days of the sale, not a single item sold. She tells me I over priced them. I show her they were lower than eBay prices. She sells them to me for $625 (half price), and flip them for about $3500.

She was actually happy, because she would have normally just put a $1 each on everything.

I also found two Dunhill pipes and a Dunhill lighter at the sale. I paid $10 and sold for $400.

Plus, before the sale, as a payment for doing the pricing, I took all the character cards that were carefully cut off the GI Joe and Transformer boxes. I sold them for $200 or simething ridicules.

I refuse to go into these type stores. They make me uncomfortable and depressed. I feel sick in any kind of discount/thrift/secondhand etc type store

So to answer the OP, nothing because I’ve never actually purchased anything from one

I've made a ton of money off this lady and she loves me for doing it. She knows she has things that are worth a ton of money but she knows she cannot get that in BR. So she sells it to me for more than she can get in BR, and I flip it for $1000's.

For example, she had a large collection of Anri figures. She had them priced around $1800. I offer $1300 and flip for $4000+

I was buying an antique entryway table and I also purchased a large vase with a gorgeous fake flower arrangement. The vase is black with a butterfly and flowers, it looks Japanese. How do I tell if it is valuable?

I'd be so tempted to keep it, but I wouldn't be able to sleep because of the fear that something would happen to it.

Glass is my weakest area, especially Asian. Only thing I know somewhat of in glass is fine crystal, Waterford, etc.
