re: WYHI: I’m (she/her) about to turn 21 and haven’t had my first kiss. I blame the pandemic.

Growing up watching romantic comedies and reading young-adult romance novels (including everything Sarah Dessen ever wrote), I was obsessed with all things related to love. I kept waiting for it to happen — but it just didn’t.

Whoever does end up hitting it sure as hell is gonna have all kinds of annoying fallout to deal with.

Boy, talk about painting with a broad brush.

Not entirely, but the pandemic did bring to a screeching hault 99% of activities where young people tend to meet one another. Schools were remote, bars and book stores were closed, coffee shops were to-go only, etc. There were no concerts, karaoke nights, or dorm/department mixers at her university. There were no school dances. I can imagine the pandemic lockdowns were really tough on hs/college age people, especially the ones who were late-bloomers still trying to learn to be more social. College is where a lot of awkward teens find themselves and learn to be more social and assertive. College is where a lot misfits and social outcasts find friends and learn that they’re not the only person going through the same things or interested in the same hobbies. The pandemic lockdowns robbed a lot of kids of these opportunities, so I would expect many to feel somewhat cheated out of “a normal experience”.

It's not really surprising that a certain contingent really got off track in Covid. But that's not all just because of the pandemic.

Socially outward kids at LSU or Auburn probably maintained a social life because they didn't freak out about Covid. They played golf, they did house parties in secret, they went to the lake, whatever. I do feel bad that they got cheated out of some of the college experience, but they survived.

People like this girl go to college in cities, or small liberal arts schools where they elevated COVID precautions to a religion because taking it seriously is what makes you better than the LSU kid out having fun. And not to get terribly political, but these types are probably pretty woke and so they see the world as a series of problems to begin with, constantly having to apologize or check their privilege or do a self-assessment for bigotry. Your friends are the same, they're obsessed with making sure you don't eat at that restaurant that let a worker pull down his mask or that your vegan friend had a bad experience with, etc. They're just fricking miserable.
