I have a friend who works in a small office of 6-10 people. He does not drink during the day to get drunk or rowdy. He drinks during the day to quiet the shakes and withdrawal symptoms.
Guy that worked for me years ago used to set his alarm for 430am so he could have a few drinks before leaving home. Family member drove him to work which was good, but he needed liquor to calm the shakes or he couldn't function. Lunchtime he would walk to a bar around the corner and have two beers. He said it was cheaper than Mcdonalds. Daiquiri shop on his way home which was near his house had cheap happy hour so he's grab a few drinks for the evening session.... Nice dude, really bad off.

Well, flying commercial airliners is a bit different than filing your TPS reports every day.

My advice to you is unless there's risk of someone getting hurt, let it go and get back to cooking the burgers and fries.

Functional drunks can function at a high level for a long time.

bullshite. I thought I was a functional drunk for several years. Truth is - there is no such thing as a functional drunk/alcoholic. They only think they're functional. They're as dysfunctional as can possibly be because they're lying to themselves about their performance and they're harming others by putting them at risk, whether physically or financially if they're performing work while imbibing.

It took my employer sitting me down and laying down the law - eventually firing me - to get me to get my shite together. After a year of sobriety, he rehired me with a significant raise. Hell of a good employer to do that. He got me sobered up, productive, and gave me a sense of worth.

People who drink during work hours have a problem that affects everyone around them and needs addressed for everyone's good.

As for how the OP should handle it, I have no earthly idea. All I can say is that I hope your employer notices it and handles it without anyone else needing to get involved.

It will naturally work itself out. If it start to affect his work the boss will most likely talk to him and hopefully see what is going on. That is what happened with a co-worker I had who was drinking almost a handle of the cheapest Vodka at work everyday. He would go hide in the bathroom and take drinks all day and always had a cup with a lid and straw with him.

One day he had just a little more than his tolerance so he started slurring his speech. When the bossed asked if he was Okay, he smelled the Vodka. They fired him on the spot. The BAD part for me is that I was picking him up and bringing him home to work everyday as a courtesy. Then the boss started asking why I didn't smell or notice it during the drives everyday. I had no freaking clue because it didn't even cross my mind.

Oh well, live and learn. If I had known, I probably would have mention it to the boss in private since we were building cabinets with power tools all day. Surprised the dude didn't cut his damn fingers off.

Functioning alcoholics suck. My sister is one and my parent's had to raise both her kids. Neither parent wanted to deal with each other or the children. What a shame to choose alcohol over your own children.

Just remember that when you make someone a target, don't be surprised when you look up and the bullseye is on you.

Oh you should definitely report him and get him fired so some dickbag can come and make you look bad.

Pro tip: alcoholic coworkers are rarely a bad thing for you. Not so much for the employer. it’s not like you’re going to profit from firing this guy.

People drink during working hours everyday.....you ever go to lunch (Hooters) and not see a group of guys, usually salesman and clients, knocking down a few cold ones, or go to Ruths and see a group of business baws or attorneys sipping on some wine or cocktails during lunch?

Most deals get done in bar rooms or over a few beers.....thats not a new concept

shite, I go to offices where the person I'm seeing has a fricking wet bar i their office.....

I goo to crawfish boils or fish frys for lunch where there are ice chest full of beer.....

Lawyer offices are famous for having a wetbar in the lobby/waiting room area

Why take a chance drinking on the job when you can just drink on the way?

Bruh that’s not your place, let it go. If he’s drinking at work they’ll figure it out sooner or later

Yeah, tell HR. Mind your business. Maybe he won’t burn you alive in a house fire. Or maybe he will if you’re a snitch. You have no idea what people might be going through. One thread hanging on….pull that thread.
