Good information. Thanks. Then I guess if it was an improper tow then it should be the owner of the property that is responsible? But I guess this ends up being a lot of fight over a few hundred dollars.

I agree. Makes me angry to think about.

This is the reality, but it's always seemed crazy to me. If a tow company tows your car without legitimate cause or permission then they are in essence stealing your vehicle and extorting money out of you to get it back. In what world does this seem fair or like it should be legal?
short answer, it's not legal to illegitimately tow someones car. Done with malicious intent and there could be criminal charges, let alone the civil suit.
Fact is, towing insurance aint cheap, and too many violations will cancel your insurance and shut your business down. On top of that state police audits each tow company once a year and hands down fines for violations for improper paperwork. These fines can get really expensive. Too many violations and the state will pull the towing permit
So, contrary to popular belief, tow companies are not just going around towing people's cars at random and "willy nilly." If they are they won't last long. But, most everyone thinks when their shite is towed it's somehow the malicious tow companies fault instead of your own dumb arse

Not in a mall. In our subdivision and everything in very nearby.

I thought about this, then realized that I will be stealing from the church and from my POV that is much more morally wrong then what happened to my neighbor.
However, if I dropped in an anonymous IOU card in the collection plate I’d feel much better.

Never even bother arguing with a tow company. Arguing with a brick wall will be more productive in terms of getting your car out without paying

I just don’t think you want to leave him with the impression your church is the kind of place where the members have hard-ons to call the tow company within just 1 hour of the end of the service and then stick him with the bill.
Too late for that

Also if it was towed there has to be proper signage saying you can't park here. If ANY of those things don't check out ask for the car to be released at no charge. If they don't want to do that call STATE police. NOT local. State police govern towing companies and are the only ones that know these things
This was the exact same thing I was told by a local towing company.

PAy the tow company, then file a claim in small claims court against the tow company for towing your car for no reason. Did anyone have proof tha the vehicle was not allowed to park where it was? If not, then this is on the tow company. The tow company could file suit against the person who claimed the vehicle could not park in the spot, but did that person have legal authority to have the vehicle towed? No.
Ask a real lawyer to make sure this can be done in small claims court.

Thou shalt not park on holy grounds outside church hours on the Sabbath day

Confront the lady and make her pay the fee. Make her feel bad as frick about it for being a Karen at church

the tow company expects to get paid for the work they did. So theres absolutely no point in even going to them about it. It’s on the church or the car owner at this point.
I’ve had friends towed from the own apartments. The tow company doesn’t GAF and will not give you the car without collecting.
This. frick a tow company. I got lucky I didn’t go to jail in college for the above scenario, I was drunk and saw them hooking my truck up in my own parking lot. I lost my shite at the driver and pulled a pistol out told him unhook it or I was gonna shoot every tire of his out and he wasn’t towing me out of my own lot. Eventually just gave him 40 bucks cash to unhook it and leave

Because not enough people fight it and they buy off local politicians.

My guess is the church had one of those signs saying church parking only and she saw the guy walk across to the burger joint and decided to be a bitch. But she doesn’t have authority to authorize the tow, whoever manages/owns the property does.
Which begs the question, who owns a church? I’ve never known anyone who owns one. Preachers usually get hired by the church, so who does actually own it? I’ve been a member of a church and never met the owner. Is it owned by like a larger association?

It was probably someone in the church office that had authority to some degree to tow them. You can’t just call a tow company they generally ask who you are before sending a tow truck over.
The reality is OP’s friend probably broke the rules, they were technically not there for church so the crazy church lady was not wrong. It’s absurd, but that’s life. Just bad luck.

There was a case here where a tow truck driver went to jail over a bad tow or attempt to tow. There was also a lawsuit as the towing company's civil defense attorney was also defending the criminal case. I watched part of the trial while waiting for a recess. I cannot remember the specifics, but it had something to do with the tow truck driver blocking the woman off and not letting her leave.
