WWYD — A car towed from a church, owner was a Sunday school teacher

So this past Sunday we accompany our new neighbor to church, and they drove. Afterwards, we walked across the street and grab a burger. When we returned, a tow truck was hauling off his car.
Come to find out, some lady that was also a member of the church called the tow company while we were at lunch and said he was illegally parked (on private property without permission).
It seems the tow truck just took her word for it and took off with his car.
He called to tow company and tried to explain that it was an honest mistake from a fellow parishioner, but the tow company is saying he owes the money and only he can get his car out because he owns it (which makes perfect sense from a legal POV).
Should he just shell out the cash to get his car out and then go talk to the preacher about raising some money, or perhaps confront that crazy lady that called the tow company (and cops) in the first place?
This one’s a bit fuzzy legally, but i suspect we would advocate for they lady/church to give the cash to reclaim his car.

It doesn’t matter where you get towed from - even your own place.. the tow company expects to get paid for the work they did. So theres absolutely no point in even going to them about it. It’s on the church or the car owner at this point.
I’ve had friends towed from the own apartments. The tow company doesn’t GAF and will not give you the car without collecting.

Though, what authority did the church member have to request the tow?
If none, I'd be asserting she is the one who owes.
I'd also say the tow company towed without proper authorization and are owed nothing if that's the case.

How is this legal? If you take my car because I parked illegally, I would think you better make sure that...oh, I don’t know....PARKED ILLEGALLY? This is why people get shot lol
What law gives tow companies the right to just go all willy nilly towing whatever car they want?

Ask the tow company for the tow ticket, and who authorized the tow. Then, check with the church or whoever owns the property it was towed from if whoever authorized the tow had permission to do so from the owner of the property. If all those things don't check out it's an illegal tow

Also if it was towed there has to be proper signage saying you can't park here. If ANY of those things don't check out ask for the car to be released at no charge. If they don't want to do that call STATE police. NOT local. State police govern towing companies and are the only ones that know these things

When North Monroe Hospital was open the CEO declared we needed some kind of parking permit for the employees and docs. Well, in the weekly dept head meetings for the next 6 months we debated what was needed for at least 30 min on that one topic. Finally decided...sticker, or get towed. The first 4 hours of initiating the policy, the doctor with the most admissions to the hospital had his car towed. I laughed my butt off. Policy that we debated weekly for 6 months got cancelled in 8 hours.

Sounds pretty likely. I can’t imagine seeing a tow truck in a church lot unless it’s inoperable. What church goer would call a tow on someone for leaving a car at church an extra hour or so. Sounds judgemental at the least. Find a new church bro

The owner of the property it is towed from or an authorized representative must give permission. Most of the time there is a towing contract with said property owner and company. If it's just a one off then the authorized agent has to sign off each time

Did you invite him to church? If so, I think I’d feel obligated to do this for him on the church’s behalf. You pay it, then go to to the preacher to be re-imbursed. Or vice versa. I just don’t think you want to leave him with the impression your church is the kind of place where the members have hard-ons to call the tow company within just 1 hour of the end of the service and then stick him with the bill.

This is the reality, but it's always seemed crazy to me. If a tow company tows your car without legitimate cause or permission then they are in essence stealing your vehicle and extorting money out of you to get it back. In what world does this seem fair or like it should be legal?
