I went to the New Orleans Air Expo last year and got to tour both the B-27 and B-29. The difference in technology between the two is astounding when you consider they were designed and built just a few years apart. Night and day.

The war advanced technology by more than a generation is less than 6 full years of conflict.
Think about the B-17 - which worked, more or less as a "prototype" for the B-29, and again for the B-52. The B-17 was proposed in 1934, first flew in 1935. The B-52 flew 17 years later.

Can somebody who's been to this give a little breakdown of it? Are the planes on static display while others are flying? Is it worth going for a just a few hours?
I'm interested in going but not sure what to expect. I know they are offering rides but can you pay extra to pilot them solo? TIA.

I doubt they let anyone solo them. I also doubt they let you at the controls. These planes are worth private jet prices.

I was stuck in rush hour traffic close to the airport a few days ago, and an Osprey passed low right in front as it was coming in for a landing. A few minutes later, a B25 came over low headed in the opposite direction. Made a usually shitty drive home a lot better.

Yes both static and flying displays of aircraft. Last year when I was there they were doing a few rides, Not much flying going on, they only fly the big bombers a few times a day. The PT-305,one of the last remaining New Orleans built Higgins PT boats will have deck tours Im guessing at the marina next to Lakefront Airport. Also static displays of WWII tanks trucks etc, with living re-en-actors of camp life of allies and axis. Its worth it, the money to get in the main gate goes towards keeping the old iron flying. Couple years back the Collings Foundation brought their B-24 and B-17 to Lakefront for tours and rides. I took a ride in their B-24, being as there are only a handful of those left flying vs the B-17. 400 bucks but damn it was worth every cent for me an aircraft mechanic and history buff. Big on the outside, tiny inside.

I walked through the B-17 last year. I'm 6'3" about 255 and I thought I was going to get stuck inside that bastard. I know people in general were shorter and weighed less in the 1940's but damn, the USAAF must have been full of damn midgets.
Seeing the B-29 fly last year was something to see. I can't imagine how it looked and sounded to have hundreds of those bombers in the sky flying over you. If you were a Jap, you'd have to have been crapping your pants.

The B29 was second only to the Manhattan Project in cost of development and procurement during World War II.

Thanks for that post. Do you happen to recall what kind of armor was there?
I actually rode in a B-17 about 20 years ago when I was a kid when the CAF stopped in Gulfport. Still remember that day very vividly as I was obsessed with WWII aviation ever since I can remember.
My next major bucket list item is to ride in a WWII fighter just not sure I'm ready to shell out two grand this weekend.

Out here now watching the P51 give someone the ride of their life. Told my wife I will be taking that ride next year.

Think they had a Sherman,a stuart, couple of half-tracks, maybe a scout car,some duece and a half, German sidecar motorbike, maybe a schwimwagen,a kubelwagen, Jeep's etc.
When we got our pre take off brief the crew chief came and gave us a talk. We were aft of the wing in the compartment with the waist gunners and ball turret. He pointed at the exposed control cables and said don't touch that, you pull or grab that you're flying the plane and it pisses off the pilots. I couldn't even imagine being. 18 year old 20000 feet over Germany trying not to die,screw up or freeze to death.

Went today. Wanted to fly in the biplane but it sold out. I was bummed.
I think I may fly the mustang next year. $1800 is high as hell, but watching the ride....it was a once in a lifetime thing. There is a reason why 75 years later the mustang is still the favorite among air racers.

Also, oddly enough the show DID start with a B52.
Was cool to see the Flying Fortress taxing, with a superfortress starting up and a stratofortress flying low overhead.

Fifi had prices all over the place, to sit where you are taking about was $585, engineer area was $900 I think, $1185 for co pilot or bombadier and tail gunner was the most.
I think I would want tail gunner. But it's isolated from the rest of the plane.
The commemorative air force does a great job. The planes were amazing and you get right up on them.
