I also make a lot more than 11.50/hour.

If you think about your average welfare recipient, or fast food worker, that’s the types that are applying for the job. Get those people around a bunch of street smart criminals and the idea of $500 easy cash to bring in a little mojo or other contraband is way to tempting.
I also agree with the previous poster about the amount of shitty corrections officers that think they are badasses. Babysitting a bunch of adult criminals like children will give a person an ego that’s hard to look past.
So what’s the solution, will better pay bring in more intelligent, and better officers, or maintain the low standard and just hope it doesn’t get someone killed

It will eventually become this way with police officers in Louisiana. There’s only so long you can ask a man to deal with one of the most dangerous criminal populations in the United States and be held under a magnifying glass by your mayor, media, and others for 35k a year.
Any reasonably intelligent person with other options wouldn’t go near being a police officer in Louisiana and deal with that kind of shite for that amount of money. Waiters make more.

Unfortunately I think you’re right. Majority of new applicants that want that type of job are probably the type you don’t want to be giving any type of power or authority to.
I’ve seen mixed results with recruiting ex military in LE. I actually think they do way better in Corrections but on that type pay it’s hard to get someone to make a career out of it

The idea that prisons are over populated and create staff shortages because there are so many nonviolent drug offenders serving long sentences is just silly.
And the ones that are locked up probably have a long list of prior convictions for other crimes.
Theft and burglary are considered non violent crimes. Should they also be immune to long sentences?

Actually, I work for the BOP. you can look up our salary. What weapons are you reffering to? we definitely don't have any. The only thing we have is pepper spray, and in case you didn't know, if you spray it, it gets on you as well.
ETA: I was being a smart-arse over the king ding-a-ling thing in case you didn't know, but if you want to find out how much of an internet badass I am, there is a sonic about 3 miles down the road where you can catch these hands.
opm.gov will tell you our base salary, not including holidays, shift diff, and OT. The prison I work at is truly one of the best prisons in the BOP. Some fights and all, but never anything bad. Just like a regular street fight. This post was edited on 12/30/17 at 11:30 pm

SO was offered to be a RN nurse at a correctional facility a while back. They offered like 52K. I said not over my dead body. She isn’t a nurse now but holds a RN license.
Wouldn’t allow her to work there for 200K.

That's why a lot of Sheriff's departments will force you to work two or so years in a prison before getting on the road. It helps give them experience around criminals while simultaneously keeping staffing up.
Why anybody would voluntarily go be a prison guard over a street cop is beyond me. At least street cops get some action and glory. Prison guards babysit overgrown violent children all day.

Because it isn't all what you see on TV. I make twice what my cop buddies make yearly. My question to you is, would you rather babysit violent children? Or would you rather put up with all the bullshite that cops have to put up with nowadays? where every move you make is on the news. In prison, it is all about respect. As long as you treat the inmates with respect, they will, for the most part, treat you with respect. I have been working in the prison system for 5 years now, and have only had to use force about 5 times.
