It’s entertainment, nothing more or less. Sure there are a few mildly retarded people who think it’s real, but your typical wrestling fan enjoys it for the entertainment, athleticism, and choreography the wrestlers put on.
When a wrestler is not very good (Reigns), it shows, but if a wrestler is great at the craft (AJ Styles), it’s great! That’s why fans bitch so much about Reigns getting as much push as he does, it’s cause his in ring ability is limited and his mic personality is bland. Also the storyline has to be good. Much like movies, When the story sucks, fans will trash it and call the writing team out on it.

I think it's the soap opera drama and story lines that are even more puzzling to me. It used to be kind of cool with Ric Flair and Macho Man improvising in their coked up ways. Now, it's painfully scripted and seems to be geared towards fans with low IQs.
