I remember seeing some of the photos, it's really amazing how durable those warships are.

One factor they have in they favor is that while objects on land are pretty much impacted dead on by the blast, the fact ships are floating on water means that they, to a degree, have some amount of give thanks to the fact the water is being pushed outward from the blast.

For it's finale the Iowa and a couple other battleships used it as target practice.

They ended up having to torpedo it to sink it.

*Of course being a target ship the magazines were empty, so sinking it by shelling would have been rather more difficult.

Why is there a tracked vehicle on a battleship (2nd to last pic)?

Agreed. Why in the hell would that ship not be preserved?

The tank was put on the deck for the nuke test.

Well, it was rather radioactive after being blasted with nukes twice.

Pretty sure the ship was radioactive with two nuclear bombs going off by it. No way you would make that a memorial. Some of the guns from the ship are stationed in Arizona state capital that were taken off before it was bombed supposedly.

Why would they intentionally sink it? Was there a specific reason to not preserve this SOB?

The fate of most armaments are scrap, target practice, or mothballing. Very few ships get mothballed.

Nevada was selected as the central target for the first nuclear test at Bikini Atoll, where it survived a 23-kiloton aerial detonation (the bomb missed),

Finally, on July 31, 1948, following a four-day naval gunfire exercise, the toughest ship of the Second World War was deliberately sunk in the Pacific by the U.S. Navy.

Now, thanks to archival research and underwater survey of more than 100 square miles of seafloor, the remains of the Nevada have been located 65 nautical miles southwest of Pearl Harbor.

So they towed this radioactive piece of steel back to Hawaii and sunk it there? Damn!

You have a lot of weapons you want to test out... theoretical blast radius is nice and all, but you have functionally outdated and still solidly built steel warships to bang away at.

Always amazing to see them fire the big guns broadside all at once and the ship move backwards 30-40 yards from the recoil.

Doesn't happen.

eta-If it did it will kill or injure everyone on the ship.

These were shown on Saturday mornings along with the movie, cereal, and cartoon, all for $0.12. Finally getting a TV ended all of that, and football took over.

Correct. One of those Saturday movies included that info.
