Looks like some of our local “geniuses” in the Mecca think it’s a good idea for ULM.

FTR, It’s a hell no for this Ouachita Parish property owner.

I wouldn't support that either. I think it depends on the area, the university, and the support that area has for a university. As a grad school alum and former instructor there, I can tell you that it isn't a worthwhile university.

Property taxes are bullshite. I'm not for taxes in general, but sales taxes are better than property taxes.

We already pay enough damned taxes and they never seem to have enough.

So frick them. If it was guaranteed that they would go for ULM, then sure. No way in hell that will happen.

I wouldnt mind being taxed a certain percentage and being able to check boxes for where i would like that tax to be allocated to. It would make me feel better even though the govment wouldnt actually allocate it to those buckets.

Hell no.

1. K-12 schools get funded by property taxes, but those schools are exclusively serving the kids who live in that city or parish. Colleges have a lot of enrollment that comes from other parts of the state or different states entirely. Why would the residents of Ouachita Parish want to be burdened with more taxes to fund college education for students that came from New Orleans, BR, Mississippi, Arkansas, or Texas and will be moving back to where they came from right after graduation.

2. Government already has enough taxes. They don't have a revenue problem. They have a spending problem and need to learn how to manage what they have more efficiently.

9,290 students at ULM for fall 2017

All 64 parishes in the state are represented this semester. Ouachita has the most students at 3,062, followed by Richland with 387 and then Rapides with 364.

There are students from 43 states outside of Louisiana. The greatest number comes from Texas at 252, followed by Mississippi at 110.

Students from 48 countries outside the U.S. attend ULM. The country of Nepal has the largest number of international students with 179. The next closest is a tie between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia with 13 each.

So only about 33% of ULM students are from Ouachita Parish. Why are the locals going to want to add a local property tax to fund education for the 67% of ULM students from other parishes, states or countries

Yep. the ole Louisiana 'general fund' - the largest ponzi scheme in history. Receive money for a stated purpose and use that money for something else.

As a renter, I support adding tons of property taxes, I'd vote yes to a 1000 mill tax.

Pure genius!

Your landlord's property tax will go up and so will your rent dummy.
