re: Would You Drive This? 2024 Ford Ranger

Id be driving a 2023 model as we speak if they had actually been available at MSRP about 6 months ago. The same of the Maverick...my son and I both would be daily-driving one if they actually built any of them that were meant to be sold at MSRP and not 120-200% above MSRP. I just ain't going to play that game. Supposed to be highly reliable...the drivetrain in the Ranger has been sold in europe and other places for a long time with a good track record.

Doesn't it only have a 4 cylinder in it?
Yes. Roughly same HP as a v-8 and comparable towing capacity to a 1/2 ton full size truck...will pull just about any bass boat sized boat. And supposedly do so at about 20 MPG. You can't buy one for MSRP though...it will be at least 20% over not counting typical dealer junk fees

That's because they cut production for the Ranger and allocated production capacity to the Bronco. I think they are making the new Ranger in Mexico but not sure. If so, it should solve the supply problem.

I'd love to have a true compact pickup. Why won't anyone build it?
Ford Maverick and Hyundai have are "uni" body compacts. Decent towing capacity for both with 4 wd and a gas engine. They can't be bought for MSRP though...if they can be bought at any price. The maverick is next to impossible to buy at any price which would be in line with a full size truck...

It's got a terrible reputation under the hood of the Bronco unfortunately.

The ranger is the size F-150’s used to be. Damn
Yep, that is what surprised me the most when a friend of mine bought one last year. First time I saw it, that was my first impression.
I once owned a 95 Ranger with the 4 cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission and loved that truck, except for the lack of space in the truck bed for hauling material----especially sheet goods that would not fit between the wheel wells.
Sure miss the gas mileage I got with that thing when compared to my 05 Chevy Silverado with the V-8 and auto transmission.

I'm gonna get shite on for this but the new Ridgeline/chopped off Pilot doesn't look half bad.
For about 90% of truck drivers the Honda is more than enough vehicle and about as reliable as anything can get. Very expensive though...stupid high resell value. I have looked at them seriously...decent towing capacity and ride like a luxury car...and excellent fuel economy combined with Honda reliability and safety...very little not to like other than cost and what your buddies at the boat ramp think if you are dumb enough to care about that...

Kind of a lazy redesign, IMO. With the strong competition these days, sales will suffer as a result.

They did a great job. I heard great things about that engine.
But I don’t like that all these car companies are switching to turbo 4 cylinders in place of V6 and V8 engines.
I want a GM Midsize bad...bad enough to consider the whole dealer markup scam...what other vehicles have been sold with the 4 cyl? The one in the ford has been around in other countries for years and is proven...I suspect the GM has been also but do not know that for certain.
The fords and GM 4 cylinder full size trucks went over like a turd in the punchbowl but I know several people who have them and they are highly satisfied. I like a growling V8 as much as anyone but if I can pull my 18 foot duck boat and get 20 MPG I don't care if it has hamsters running on a wheel...

I really like the Ford Everest, which Is basically a Ranger with an SUV skin.. they aren’t available in the US, im guessing b/c they want people to spend more on the Explorers and Expeditions.. but i like the size and the looks .

I have seen that and that is problematic...the same engine sold with slightly less environmental requirements has happened many times....as solid as sears everywhere but the US. Just a couple of extra HP needed over 200K miles is a LOT....

Don't hate the new ranger but the Canyon AT4 is a much better looking truck IMO.
I'm getting truck fever again and trying to discern between full and mid-size as far as what I need/can live with.
As much as I gripe sometimes, it's hard to give up my '18 Tundra.

10 speed transmission is garbage.

not a bad looking truck but I'm keeping my V8 Tundra until the wheels fall off
I have a 2014 TRD limited crew cab, with 63,000 miles on it (I'm retired) so, it is a slut when it comes to gas mileage...nothing wrong with some sluts..

In a year or two, when I'm ready for a new F-150, the XLT will probably have a base MSRP of $280k...so I might have to drive that Ranger.
A 2023 with same options as my 2017 has a 37% higher MSRP!

It’s been in the Silverado for several years now. Supposedly they don’t have many issues with them at all.
But it sounds like a weed eater.

The styling update for the Toyota has been one the best in a long time imo. The new sequoia looks sharp.

I have it it off an on for a couple of years but going to a dealership has cured me of it for now and the foreseeable future. I ain't happy with paying $1000 less than sticker...I am almost violently angry at the idea of tacking on another $10K or so just for shits and giggles...
