The infinity g series filled that gap. G37 coupe and credit card and you had a pretty good sleeper sporty car.
And Infiniti hasn’t touched these in what, 8 years? 9?
Nissan’s new head guy said he envisions Infiniti to be “Nissan plus” moving forward. Ok, so make the new Q50 and new Maxima close cousins, but give the Q50 more luxury appointments and make the Maxima the enthusiast’s choice.
Nissan (and Infiniti) have lost their way. They were poised to kick Acura’s arse and close ground on Lexus in the 2000s and they’ve fallen apart completely. It’s sad because Nissan is capable of so much better.

always thought the 1990 Maxima was bad arse.
That is a gorgeous car.
I liked the 2000 model SE Maxima too. The late 1990s one was okay. Not as good as the one in your picture though.

I was driving one of these in 1981:

My neighbor has 3 Maxima's. Him and his wife have a navy blue one. His kid gotta older one that is white. He got an old cutlass he fixed up. It is tiger purple sitting on 20s and it will rattle my house with the motor or the speakers.

Drive it as in? I'd drive anything just for the hell of it.

I owned this exact car, color and all. Had to sell it after only six months to attend UF. Dad said sell your car to prove to me that you're serious. Sold in less than one week. Damn thing talked to ya.

A few points, FWIW:
* The much more common version with the automatic transmission is not what I'd call a "sports sedan". That three-ratio slushbox with a relatively high first gear is fairly slow off the line, and with only three ratios, a 'just right' one often isn't to be had. So if you want a sports sedan, you need the much less common version with a five-ratio manual.
* By the time the last plain 810 was replaced by the 1981-model 810 Maxima (in another sign of ongoing changes, a "Datsun by Nissan" no less), the 240Z (introduced as a 1970 model) had long been replaced by the 260Z (in 1974), 280Z (in 1975), and then all-new 280ZX (in 1978). The engine in the 1981 810 Maxima was fuel-injected, unlike the 240Z engine, which was carbureted, but probably made less power due to increasing emission regulations (I say probably because I think somewhere in there the rating changed from the old SAE gross to some sort of net rating).
* Handling of course had the advantage of being the last of the rear-wheel-drive models.

RX7
RX-7 guy here, the arch nemesis of the 280zx.
Both were too light in the rear end but could Fly. ZX could beat me on straightaways but I could dust them on curvy roads

240-280Z was the shite, especially when you put 3 weber carbs on it.
If you could get and keep them sync yes. Other wise just a PITA.
