Would you consider this to be a patient privacy violation

Sorry so long but please read. A friend of mine went to the doctor with her elderly mother in law just like she's been doing for the last 4 years. This doc was her mil doctor only and never treated my friend. While they were in the exam room, the doctor made a comment to my friend about an extremely personal medical condition that no one knew about other than my friends primary care doc. Of course, now everyone knows since the iidiotoc doc said this in front of the mil ! Doc should have just put my friends medical info on a neon billboard because the mil told everyone . Both doctors work for the same company but not in the same building . My friend called office manager and was told that mil doc wouldn't just blurt out a personal medical condition. Manager then proceeds to tell my friend that the mil doc wouldn't tell someone that if it not his patient. Manager insisted that my friend asked the doc a medical question about herself first because doc knows better than to say this because it s a hipaa violation .(my friend recorded the phone conversation). Isn't this a violation of patient privacy? I know I would be pissed if this happened to me?

If he never treated the friend, how does he know about her extremely personal medical condition?
But yes, that's a HIPAA violation.

I would consider that OP to be a violation of the English language

if your friend was not there as a patient, then yes it is a hippa violation. Good luck proving it though

Hard to follow but if MIL was in the exam room someone should have ask her to leave if they didn't want info discussed .

not sure how its a hippa violation if a doctor tells the patient about their own condition lol. The other doc could have consulted with that dr about the issue. no big deal, no violation

The office manager told her that mil doctor had to go into my friends records to see this info. My friend said the doc was very rude once he realized he screwed up mil prescription . She said she felt like the doc was being spiteful because he made a big error on mil prescription and didnt like to be questioned , much less proven wrong

Did he blurt out personal info AFTER he was called out? He'd have to then go to her chart and find that info ...
You have confused the crap out of me.
eta: In the healthcare field ... I would consider that a hippa violation BUT idk how you prove it.

Yes it's a violation. Contact the state medical licensing board and lodge a complaint. It's stupid of the doctor to do this and his license deserves a hit for it.
