I've got a 2019 kia optima. Interior fit and finish is not all that great. It has over 80 thousand miles on it and I've had to replace the alternator. I get oil changes every 7500 to 9000 miles. The car's great for what I paid for it.

I don’t think they are the “cheap” well made car they used to be.

The Forte isn't being discontinued, just renamed, like the opitma to the K5. The K4 will be the new Forte, so parts won't be an issue, that's like saying a redesign for a Camry will make the older camry's have part issues. Kia's seem to be good quality cars for a lower entry fee. The Telluride has been the SUV of the year for the last 5 years.

Had a Kia Forte rental car. Great on gas mileage but too small.
Would never purchase another Hyundai.
Back with Toyota.

I am a Toyota driver. I waited until I was older to buy my first Toyota. Prior to that, I was involved in a horrible crash and had to buy a car fast. I settled on a Kia Borrego SUV because it was big, and I was anxious after the crash.
That car was a tank. I purchased it with 25k on it and never had an issue. I drove the heck out of it. I loved it, but I did not want to pay the high cost to transfer it when I moved to Louisiana. I traded it for a Toyota Camry and sometimes wish I had kept it for one of the kids.
It had 100,000 when I traded it and was a great car. Yes, the seats were stiff, and the interior was a bit ugly, but the engine was great, and it stuck to the road like glue when it snowed or rained heavily.
I felt very safe in it, and it never let me down.

A relative has had two Kia s . The first was a Sorrento maybe and it was okay , had minor issues. The second one was another model, very bland base , again no major problems but many smaller issues that started to add up. Nissan Kicks now (the smallish suv) besides the tiny tires it is an improvement although to early to report on reliability .

CVT’s have come a long long way, and as long as you change the fluid out as recommended, they are fine.

Wife had a 2016 KIA Sportage that my daughter now has. 120k on it and never had an issue other than regular maintenance. Bought her a 2024 Teluride a few months back and she loves it. It was nicer than I expected it to be.

It will last 150k easily with normal maintenance
But how long til the interior starts rattling?

If you look at reliability ratings, you'll find out that this thread is full of a lot of bias that doesnt match reality.

have been casually looking for a new or fairly new car as a commuter
This I know as a fact from talking to highly competent, experienced technicians in the industry. Many earlier model Kia and Hyundai models have engine problems. They are not repairable and the used engines are so unreliable many shops won;t work on them.
Buy a Toyota, Subaru or Honda,

like the Corolla SE but the CVT transmission scares the shite out of me
What’s with the CVT hate? Millions of cars are out there with CVTs with no issues. I’ve never heard of some CVT failure epidemic.

Ideally I would find a fairly new Corolla with the 6 speed manual but they are rare. I really like driving a standard so I did a search for manual transmission cars and stubbled upon a KIA forte GT with a 6 speed for what appears to be a decent price.
When I lived in Dallas I wanted a standard transmission because I spent a lot of time on interstate hwys. Wanted to be able to speed up faster than most 4 or 6 cylinders do with an automatic. Had a job that required driving part of four states so I started out with a Sentra wagon w/5-speed. Got a Mazda MX-6 w/5-speed next. Went from that to a Civic EX with 5-speed. All were great for what I want. I almost bought a new loaded Corolla in 2015, but went with a loaded 2012 Camry instead. Still driving it and it only has 49K miles on it.

A good one is nothing to be concerned with. Do not get me wrong, I love a standard transmission too, but, if that is what makes sense, I would not stress over the CVT or let that prevent you from moving forward.
