I've since changed the terms in the OP. Thank you for pointing that out, because you're right, the skin cancer people or those with highly treatable cases should not be involved.

Magic Johnson had treatable HIV. You would've killed him?

What if pressing the button also meant the end of the person's life who pressed it? Just to have equal skin in the game and to guarantee your motives were pure.

As long as you had cancer or aids, sure you could find someone to give you such a button.

The whole post was an idea I got from another thread and I recently watched a movie "The box" that has to do with severe consequences after pressing a button for a large sum of money. It's never as easy as one thinks.

So. People often justify the killing of thousands by the atomic bombs by citing how many lives they saved in the long run (I agree). Would you sacrifice yourself and many others to save infinitely more?

No, and that's an easy decision.

Yeah? That isn't even a question.

However, like another poster mentioned (And I didn't think about before the OP) if the cures to those two diseases were on the brink of being found, I'm talking like someone went to the future, came back and said, "Yeah, they both have cures in 10-20 years," then no.

But if it's something that we couldn't cure for centuries then yes, without a doubt. Which I guess is what makes this question so difficult to answer, because we don't know how far realistically that those cures are from right now.

Blacks/African Americans have the most severe burden of HIV of all racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Compared with other races and ethnicities, African Americans account for a higher proportion of new HIV diagnoses, those living with HIV, and those ever diagnosed with AIDS

This is from the CDC

I have had stage IV lymphoma twice. First time when I was 41. I had 4 kids under age 13 at the time including a 6 month old girl. The relapse was at age 42 and I was given a 35% survival prognosis.

I survived and have been free and clear of the disease for 4 years. It took a couple of years to get my body restored healthy enough to function as I did prior to the disease. I fought hard while receiving SSD to ready myself to re-enter the work force. I did so earlier this year in a higher up position in my previous industry. I have seen my kids grow and their accomplishments.

As a result of my own experience, I can't stomach the thought that someone could have taken this life experience away from me with the push of a button. Cancer sucks but is not always a death sentence.

Survival stories like yours give many hope. Keep it up and good luck moving forward.

Scruffy is one poster that interests the shite out of me. He's on a lot of different boards.

I'd like to buy him a beer one day.

This is simply a classic moral delima exercise writ large.

The classic delima goes something like: there is a train coming down the tracks. On this set of tracks up ahead of the train are 10 people that can not move. You have the ability the throw the switch so the train avoids hitting the 10 people, but the track that it is switched to has 1 person on it that can't move. Do nothing and 10 people die. Throw the switch and you're directly responsible for 1 person dying. What do you do?

With the cancer/aids, you hit the button and kill 10s of millions of people, but if you don't hit the button 100s of million will die from these diseases over the next 100 years. Compound that over thousands of years and you've literally killed billions and billions of people by not hitting that button. Not to mention you could end up dying yourself from cancer or aids. The morally right thing to do is hit the button no matter how you slice it.

The craziest part of that would be the button pusher dying off as a result. But this is silly as hell.
