4 is the answer, by the way. Chicago is the sole redeeming point of interest in the entire region.

Ehh...Michigan's UP, Minneapolis-St.Paul, Badlands National Park.

A lot of people are saying 4 but 3 doesn't look very appetizing.

4 has some really shitty towns and cities and some bad weather, but Chicago still outstrips just about everywhere except NYC as far as urban quality of life goes. Michigan is mostly really nice outside of Detroit, and Minnesota and Wisconsin are pretty great places as well.

I've lived all over the U.S. The Northeast outside of NYC would be the worst for me. Large parts of the South are pretty big shitholes as well, but at least it's warm.

No beach, no mountains, cold as hell.

While I agree that overall this region is the worst, there are some bright spots.

The UP of Michigan is awesome.
The Black Hills and Badlands of the Dakotas are incredible.
Minnesota is a gorgeous state.

Both are isolated from other states, stuff is expensive as hell, and there is a lot of flying or sailing involved with travel.

Alaska beats Hawaii in that you get permanent fund money if you live there all year but I don't think it offsets the fact that you are living in fricking Alaska vs the lower 48.

How is Delaware in the Southeast?

There are three counties in Delaware. There is one that's ajacent to Philadelphia that is New Jersey for all intents and purposes, and then there are two that are basically alabama. Very rural, very flat, very black, very weird.

Really?

Boston?
Philadelphia?
Vermont?
Upstate New York?
Portland (and the rest of Maine for that matter)?

Region 2 is by far the best if you're into the outdoors. Although it's hard to separate Montana and Idaho from Washington and Oregon.

Southwest.

It's hot. Very little grass. Lots of "immigrants."

Texas is ok. Arizona and New Mexico suck balls though.

I'm sure it is beautiful in its own right judging by the pictures, but I don't think I could live there.

It's clear you've never stepped foot in these states. The natural beauty both offer separate them from Oklahoma and Texas.

Best region IMHO as well... 4 of my top 10 U.S. states.

I know Texans are wild about Texas. Honestly I like Texas a lot. Cool state. Unique culture. But let's just be honest about something, outside the big cities a lot of Texas is really, really shitty.

None of those have very much appeal to me, and a lot of upstate, while beautiful, are some of the most depressed shitholes in America.

Natural beauty, yes.

The problem is you are still in a desert and being in the elements for an extended period sucks there.

I'd live in Wisconsin for the people and Chicago cause it is a cool town, violence not withstanding. The rest can get rocks and weather is awful.
