On this map the Southeast region has DC, Miami, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, Asheville, Charleston, Savannah, the Smoky Mountains, the Gulf Coast beaches, and the Outer Banks. Sure there are shitty areas in the South, but it's not one of the bottom two regions according to that map

I lived on Oahu for a few years. It really is what you make of it. Sure, you can't really go on road trips but there is plenty to keep you occupied locally and several other unique islands. Plus, flights to LAX and SEA/TAC are pretty cheap when you feel like getting off the island. A lot of people seem to have problems with the locals but that wasn't my experience. Be cool and stay out of meth areas and you shouldn't have many problems.
