I didn’t go through the actual storm, but I arrived in Mexico Beach 72 hours after Hurricane Michael (Cat 5) made landfall in Oct 2018. The scene was indescribable. It looked like a thermonuclear warhead had detonated over the town. One thing that sticks out was the drive there along Hwy 98 once I got past Tyndall AF Base. It’s a drive of about 20 miles if I remember right. There’s nothing but straight road with pine trees as far as you can see. The entire way every single pine tree bigger than a sapling had snapped about 10’ up and we’re laid over almost neatly like dominos.

I was down there Sunday afternoon through Friday at lunchtime from then until the following February. Saw a lot of things that just blew my mind at the power of Hurricane Michael.

Katrina No power for 16 days, flood waters stopped about 8 blocks from the house..

Ida No power for 10 days

Gustov No power for 3 days

Zeta No power for 2 days. Actually drove home from work when the back side was hitting.

Here for all 4. Learned after Katrina about having a generator back fed into the house. Unless my house is no longer standing, I want to get back asap to get things done around the house after a storm passes.

I was alive for Betsy, but I was not even 2 yet.

We actually lost power during Rita for about 12 hours in Old Metry. We had some major rain bands hit the area while it was hitting LC.

Gustav is up there for us. My wife had a miscarriage during the storm. Not a good time .
We were without power for a week or so.

Lili in 2002. Been lucky in Lafayette. Seems like storms stay away from the Vermillion Bay poop chute. Lili had us thinking about leaving when it bombed out right before landfall. Thankfully it came back down to Earth and made landfall as a Cat 1. The Lafayette I-10 shield does work.

Saying Rita was bad for St Amant is like Lake Charles people saying Ida was bad for them. We had some thunderstorms from it but nothing bad.

Some of you people are trying to put yourselves in storms that didn't really effect you

Was without power in 08 during Gustav in BR (lived off Gardere) for three weeks. Told myself never again.
As life would have it, I opened an insurance agency in Gulf Shores, and on day one of Sally, our office phone began ringing at 2am.
Ended up evacuating for Biloxi 16 hrs later, and stayed in a hotel room for three days filing claims. Filed 210 in 72 hrs. In all, 707 claims filed.
Still have one open.
So, by far, Sally is the worst for me.

Were you evacuated to Lake Charles after Katrina?

How did Rita affect Baton Rouge where you live?

Granted, I have only experienced the effects of a hurricane or its remnants in Minden, LA but Ida was by far the worst around here. Rita was pretty strong. Gustav was just hot air and Katrina was a no show around here.

Naval Research Laboratory ocean-floor pressure sensors detected a freak wave caused by Hurricane Ivan in the Gulf of Mexico in 2004. The wave was around 27.7 meters (91 ft) high from peak to trough, and around 200 meters (660 ft) long.[32]

Of the ones I’ve stayed for, Ida was probably worst.

Wind was bad. I live close to the big power transmission towers that hold the lines across the river, and there was tornadic activity on both sides that brought the tower down on the westbank.

Ida for sure.

Gustav was bad, but it was before I had kids. I think having kids in the house for something like that made it far worse for me.

I didn't sleep at all. I just listened to the house creak and wind roar until it passed.

Irma - 140 mph winds but no damage. 3' of water for about 2 months in the street due to earlier rains.

Andrew - Parents hated the pin oak, neighbors hated their carport. Pin oak took out the carport and the neighbors got new a garage.

Katrina - Strangers lived in my empty apartment for 3 months. They only thing she saved from her home in NOLA was a signed Andy Warhol painting.

Rita - One month to the day of Katrina. BR got hit, back-to-back. Trees down everywhere, 100 Oaks has a makeshift sign "50 Oaks".

Gustav - I shimmied up a truss in the attic to tie down the attic fan for this storm. It had blown off and was hanging by the electrical cord on the other side of the roof. Good times.

Time is marked in my life by hurricanes.

Hurricane Edith (1971)
A tornado hit in Baton Rouge that made it really bad. I remember looking out the window and seeing big trees fall. And my dad and his friends were standing in the street, leaning into the wind and not falling over. It was bizarre to see.

Stout on a roll...

I get what you're saying, but Rita had some pretty big and strong outlying rain bands. Like I said earlier, we lost power in Metairie during Rita.

It was some major rain, but no strong winds.
