Lack of understanding the tribes/clans is a huge issue. But Britain promised part of the Middle East (Jordan) to France, a large portion to themselves, and Palestine to the Zionist, but they also convinced a lot of Islamic people’s they would own their own land with no overlords of they overthrew the Ottoman Empire during WWI.

The decision of the Khwarezmid Empire to attack a trade caravan from Mongolia, causing Genghis Khan to completely exterminate their entire empire in two years (and I really do mean exterminate) and indirectly leading to the siege of Baghdad, which put the Middle East into the development toilet for hundreds of years.

Meh. I'd argue this wasn't the mistake. The mistake was Russia sticking up for the Serbs. If Europe would have just allowed Austria-Hungary to retaliate without everyone getting involved we probably would have delayed WW1 for quite a while.
We'd also all probably be speaking German right now, but...who knows if that's a bad thing.

The assassination resulted in their country being invaded and embroiled in WWI, then being reconstituted into a greater Yugoslavia with other ethnic factions, then going through savage ethnic conflict in WWII, then being subjected to a second Yugoslav iteration dominated by Communism, then having a brutal ethnic war topped off by NATO bombardment and general fracture. Now they are back to having their own country again. Bosnia, Croatia, and Slovenia gained nation status, eventually, Not sure if it was worth it for them either though.
