They are slowly eroding it in most cases. However, they don't fire them unless they have cause (like this situation). It's a game of attrition and not backfilling then re-allocating funds once people retire/leave.
I work with a lot of large corporations and it's a common theme. Happening slowly and without attention, that's the plan.

It's less political than you'd think. The erosion started under Biden. They all overreacted to the George Floyd movement in this country. Companies started getting put on blast for diversity reasons. The course correction started a couple years later and has just gradually continued.
It was the fact that a huge % of our society decided everything was racist over night and went witch hunting.
Similar to #MeToo. They (society) took it way too far, then it started fading away.
