What's the difference between just "hiking" those trails,as opposed to "thru hiking"?

There's no monetary reward, and nobody cares outside the world of hikers, so there's not much incentive to cheat. There are trail registers along the way, so if somebody really wanted to confirm it, I guess they could check that she signed them all.
