As soon as she was taken into custody, all responsibility for her well being passes to the jailers. Period.

Kid might as well stay in jail, he has no shot at life with them as parents.

Nothing screams classy like a neck tattoo.

the sheriff for refusing medical treatment
They about to pay out their arse.
And also note even though the judge gave a high bond this could have been avoided by not taking anychances when she 1st notified the jailers.
Also, in Louisiana Sheriff's have the power to release pre-trial inmates on O.R bonds......Not sure if they can in Michigan. But if so big screw up.

This is definitely not her first tour of the facilities, how else would anyone know they need to "go to medical"?
geez what a reach. It's as easy as mentioning on your first day there (she gave birth on the 5th day) that she's 8 months pregnant, and asking what she's supposed to do if something comes up. They would say, we'd send you down to medical if something happened.
The $10k bond makes me think this wasn't her first time there. But not her saying that.

Ummmmm. NO. Judge sets the bond, not the Sheriff. They have pre-set bonds for standard minor offenses (those are set by the Judge ahead of time) but all others are set post arrest by a Judge or Magistrate. You really think they are going to let a Sheriff (who gets paid per prisoner to keep people in jail) set a bond? I could see that now. Suspended license? $1 Billion dollars.

Ummmm....Yes.
Louisiana Sheriff's have the power to grant an Own Recognizance Bond.
And if pre-trial inmates with non-violent crimes have medical problems many Sheriff's will do this to avoid the parish paying the medical bills.

Cite a statutory source please. Seeing as that I worked the bonding operation for EBRSO when I was younger I didn't know about this. Plus the Chief Clerk for a district Judge that I am meeting for breakfast says over text he wants to read up on that Statute so they can stop assigning duty Judges every week. Wow. The things you learn on the OT. Thanks!

But thank the Virgin Mary herself this brave officer served and protected us all by ridding the roads of a rosary hanging from a rear view mirror.
And if the driver was a murderer, rapist, child molestor you would feel the same way?

This is 100% on the medical staff at the jail.
Medical departments are the #1 reason for litigation against corrections agencies. They are generally horrible nurses and PA's who are unable to find employment anywhere else.
I don't buy the part of the story about the high bond on a first offense of DWLS? She either has significant other proposals or possibly a history of failure to appear to justify the high bond. Why would a Judge order such a high bond because the cost of housing her is very expensive. Jails are busting at the seams. Bond is the only bot alleviate that pressure.

Come on... Comparing driving on a suspended license to being a rapist, murderer, or child molester?

Not sure of statute.
I just know that in the past I have seen inmates released on O.R Bonds by the sheriff because of medical problems and I have seen Sheriffs release inmates on O.R. bonds to work as informants.
I'm speaking strictly from experience.

I am trying hard not to call you a jack arse here but you keep pressing the issue. The power to grant bond is a statutory authority that derives from the LA Code of Criminal Procedure CCRP Arts. 314 and 315. The Sheriff is not mentioned or granted that power by law.
What you are likely referring to is they wished to release someone OR and got the duty Magistrate to sign the bond. That isn't setting or granting the bond. That is REQUESTING that the duly authorized person set it.
So, as I said before, ummmmm NO.

I can only hope one day you aren't fire "despite what else is missing from the story." It's not just possible, but likely that this woman has:
1. Been to that same jail mutiple times
2. Faked a need for medical attention before.
Collect facts, then make decisions. Not the opposite.
So what if she did fake for medical attention before? They knew she was pregnant. I know jails get fake medical complaints from prisoners - happens all the time. But, with serious medical issues, you get the prisoner treatment.
Know of a case (friend handled the plaintiff's case) where woman is jailed on a drug charge and her mother called over and over to try to get the jail to give her daughter her antispsychotic meds. They thought she was faking. She stabbed one eye (and maybe both, I can't remember) out with a pencil.
Guess she wasn't faking.
