for those of you with legal-knowledge/backgrounds, what is the penalty for flagrantly lying about such a thing (gasser stood over him, said this or that, and fired again).

this was MAJOR misinformation. indirectly it could be responsible for many more weeks of social problems/protests/etc.

as for gasser.. i can imagine a hypothetical string of conditions that would make firing a gun a legitimate option but it seems unlikely and possible trigger happy behavior.

i sure hope some decent factual info comes to the surface

That witness is a racist. Lied about the entire encounter because the shooter was white.

I'm not sure there would be a penalty assuming he/she wasn't under oath and didn't initiate the (fake) report to the police.

What would liberals riot over without a little false testimony. I was kinda shocked someone was so close to hear " i told you not to frick with me" while cars were all around driving and gunshots were going off. Of course 24 hours later we now know joe mcknight was an aggressive POS who attacked the shooter, and hopefully the protestors stay home bc there really is nothing to protest

Nothing indirect about it. Some people will resort to protests directly because of that statement.

I would sue the piss out of NOLA.com for publishing false information without fact checking to see if it was accurate or not.

Ferguson, Baton Rouge, and now Terrytown.

Witnesses lie to promote their narrative and create preference above the law. They know the liberal media will give them a platform to promote their narrative which in turn gives the liberal media viewership.

Quid pro quo at it simplest form.

I don't really want to get into it with you again but we don't KNOW that McKnight attacked anyone. You're passing it off as a fact and it isn't.

Between that witness and Ryan lotche, 2016 is a good one for liars. Lying is so hot right now.

Why is the witness saying shooter stood over apologizing person and shot him again still included in most NOLA.com articles about this?
It's irresponsible to keep this in all these articles and updates.

Maybe, and it would be stretching it quite far, but one could possibly try to charge them with obstruction. If you could show that his statement was given with the intent to obstruct or interfere with an investigation. But again, this would be a stretch. People lie to police all the time and there is no general duty to not lie to the police.

While I agree the false statement to the media is despicable, I'm not sure what sort of case Gasser would have against Nola.com. Perhaps against the witness directly, but not the site.

Shaun King ran with the initial witness testimony instead of waiting for the facts to unfold
