Because the dealerships paid off the politicians over the years to make direct vehicle sales illegal in most states.

Talked to a Chevy dealer owner a few months ago. He said he has made more money in the last 2 years that he has in 25 years.
I have a Ford dealer friend who told me he prays every night that Ford NEVER solves the chip shortage.
The 2 biggest expenses in a dealership new car department is floor plan interest and advertising. The chip shortage eliminated both while increasing the dealer profit per car. They are selling less cars but they having more gross profit (before expenses).
At the same time they are having to spend a lot of money (over 100K) to upgrade for electric vehicles that they do not expect to sell here in the south.

Went to 3 dealers over the weekend and left pissed off at all 3. Charging $8k over MSRP because there are ……….less intellectual people that will pay it.

People always lie about how little they pay for their car and how much they paid for their house. Dealers are making record profits while selling a record low number of cars. OT always makes me laugh

And would have to open repair/servicing facilities, hire staff and provide benefits to man them, not be able to use the dealer as a middleman in a dispute, etc.
They could contract with certified private repair centers.

Orlando. I will order from Louisiana and pick up though if you know somewhere. Can visit friends and family.

There’s no new cars right now. Bodies are built but no chips to complete. Back around December for every day you waited it added a month to projected delivery.
Why I can sell my 2017 Tahoe now for more than I paid for it.

Dealerships have had laws written to keep them in existence. They would be long diminished if it was LAW in most states that they are required to exist. They say it protects the consumer, but it protects the dealer.
There is NO reason for the games dealerships try to play. I simply walk out if there are games but some don't even know they are getting played.

I hate the dealership just like the next guy, however it’s also not fair to them they have no supply of cars to sell that are new. They have to make their money somehow. They also have to keep the lights on.

……..they are all making record profits. Lol

The problem lies between the ears of American consumers and the over supply of money. As long as Americans have to have a new vehicle every two or three years the dealership has all the advantages in these situations. Get a good mechanic and make your car run a couple of hundred thousand miles and quit buying shite that's engineered to breakdown when the odometer turns to six digits.
Once this happens, the dealers will be begging you to buy a car.

Texas' auto dealer lobby is strong in Texas.

If you want to get really mad, consider the fact the dealership gets about 40% of the car sale price. That burns my arse (Just like a flame about 3 feet off the ground)
We just bought a Tahoe and an Accord. Paid Sticker for both and felt totally violated.

? So a dealer makes 14k on a 35k accord? I don't think so.

That's the dumbest thing on TD for a long time.
Dealers in the US make a net profit of about 3-4% of sales on a good year. Trust me most people could not make it in that environment. You would be a lot better off just investing in farm land.
