I guess its changed in the last 20 years. They never cared about attendance when I was in school. Regardless most students will not make up days during spring break...also i would think most of the faculty has plans also.

I'd MUCH rather be stuck at home with no power from an ice storm than no power in August from a hurricane.
Meh, if the power is out for any extended period of time, it will be a bitch.

They used to not be able to grade us on attendance, but that changed last semester. Now most of my teachers give some kind of attendance quiz or simply take attendance for participation grades. That actually made a difference in one of my classes last semester. Damn participation
ETA: word to the wise, it was MKT 3401 for my business minor. Santaella is a nice lady but she takes attendance EVERY SINGLE DAY! It was a worthless class to go to, because marketing lol, but still go.

Wow...college has changed. Do they still give you a syllabus?
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:49 am to Topwater Trout
Yup. First day is still syllabus day!
Although most of my teachers get right into teaching on the first day after a cursory glance at the syllabus.

Teachers still generally don't care. The university does though. Financial aid got involved. I guess they figure if you're not in class, you're more likely to fail and they're less likely to get their money back.

That's why you take Karam for 3401

We missed a lot of classes in my day
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:52 am to ILeaveAtHalftime
I got A's on all of my tests, all of the homework assignments, the final project and everything. But my attendance grade brought me down to a B. I was mad.
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:54 am to When in Rome
Holy shite attendance dropped you a letter grade? How much did you miss?
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:54 am to ILeaveAtHalftime
I'm taking Karam right now. That guy is awesome
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:55 am to bigberg2000
Well I had like a 91 before attendance. It dropped me to around an 88 or 89.
And I missed probably one class a week.

Ahh ok. Not as bad then.
Posted on 1/27/14 at 8:56 am to When in Rome
now that is just stupid. If you make an A you shouldn't be penalized for attendance. I can see it working the other way and a student being rewarded for great attendance.

From T. Scott Barry (a meteorologist in NOLA)

It continues to look like an ice storm is coming for both Northshore & Southshore parishes starting Tuesday, 1/28. Precipitation will begin Tuesday morning, carry in to the afternoon, and well in to Tuesday night for both Northshore & Southshore parishes.
Ready yourselves to COMPLETE all your travel plans by Monday night, 1/27, that take you over bridges or long distances, because many, if not all, bridges will see closures on Tuesday through Tuesday night & Wednesday.
In the metro New Orleans area, we're an especially vulnerable area for power outages, from the ice accumulations that I'm expecting, as the way I see it, because we will encounter the highest winds on Tuesday night, relative to the rest of Southeast Louisiana, since we'll have a fetch of stronger winds coming off the lake. So be sure you have warm winter wear inside your home or where you'll be staying at Tuesday night & Wednesday morning, just in case you lose electricity. Electricity could be out for a day or longer.
It is likely that schools & business will get closed on account of this coming ice storm.
quote:
??For New Orleans metro area??:
6AM - 12 Noon, Tues., 1/28 -->> Light rain beginning EARLY morning, becoming mixed with freezing rain by mid to late morning. Windy with North-Northeast winds of 15-25 mph & gusty. Temperatures starting in the mid 30's around sunrise, gradually lowering to the low 30's by late morning. This is for New Orleans. Wind chills feeling like the low 20's!
12 Noon - 6 PM, Tues, 1/28 -->> Light Freezing Rain, mixed with rain; temperatures running between 30° to 33°. Windy with North winds of 15-25 mph. Wind chills feeling around 20° This is for New Orleans. Ice starting to accumulate. Accumulations between 1/4" to 1/3" from fallen precipitation between 12 PM and 6 PM. Icicles forming. Bridges & roads closed. Travel is discouraged & dangerous.
6 PM Tues., 1/28 -- 12 AM Midnight, Wed., 1/29 -->> Light Freezing Rain continuing, changing over to a sleet / freezing rain mixture 1-2 hours before Midnight, late Tuesday night. Windy! North winds of 20-30 mph & gusty, producing wind chills feeling like 16-19°. Temperatures running between 29°-32° during this time. This is for New Orleans. Ice accretion growing and building. Additional ice accumulations of up to 1/4". Some power outages now occurring near the Lake on the southshore in metro New Orleans. Any travelling should be cancelled. All bridges should be closed, with other road closures.
12 AM Midnight, 1/29, Wed. -- 6 AM, Wed. morning, 1/29 -->> Sleet, (ice pellets), for New Orleans, mixed with freezing drizzle. Precipitation tapering off around 3 AM. Only a 30-40% chance for light snow flurries, in New Orleans, particularly between 1 AM and 4 AM, pre-dawn, Wednesday morning, 1/29. Remember JUST A CHANCE; NOT a likelihood. But, IF snow, then only a Trace, (non-measureable), up to 1/4" accumulation. Isolated to widely scattered power outages continuing. Total Ice Accumulations of around 1/2" for metro New Orleans. Temperatures running between 32° to 28°, with a low of 27-29°. BITTERLY cold wind chills of 13 to 19°. North winds of 20-30 mph with higher gusts.
For Baton Rouge area, -->> I also see you all up there getting a big chunk of freezing rain, & icing during Tuesday morning through Tuesday afternoon, 1/28. It then looks to change over to a freezing rain and ice pellet (sleet) mixture by early evening around 6 PM. My 7-point snow checklist indicates 4 yes's and 3 no's by 1 model and 4 no's and 3 yes's by another model at 6 PM Tuesday.
Between 9 PM, Tuesday night, and 12 Midnight, my 7-point snow checklist shows 5 yes's and 2 no's to snow. So it looks like your best chance for snow in Baton Rouge will come, I think, between 9 PM Tuesday night, up to as late as 3 AM pre-dawn, Wednesday morning. You will encounter significant ice accretion there in the Baton Rouge area during the day on Tuesday, 1/28, and total snowfall accumulations look to run between 1/2" to 2".
