All current production is going to Ukraine to replace the bombed out windows there.

Why do you (or anyone reading) think this is? Why is there suddenly such a high demand for everything?

We are building a house now. Started in November. We still haven’t gotten our brick. Our builder also said a single 2x6 went from about 7 dollars early this year to 17 dollars now.

architects designing more buildings with more storefront openings and exterior glazing. Glass is more modern than brick.

Country is riiiiiiiiiiich. Until it isn’t and everyone stops playing 3/2 housing mogul.
You see, I’m a real estate mogul on credit used to purchase stick homes with no yard or any place for the hoarding non-housekeeping Women to stack Tupperware bins full of consumer crap housewares.

We are building now... Our contractor ordered windows when we signed the contract in Sept. They arrived in December.

Residential Super here: Our manufacturer had a plant close in PA. during covid. Didnt re-open for whatever reason. Shipped production from there to another plant in Tx. That plant now trying to do the output of 2 plants. Not working. Throw in the supply chain shortage on top of that. Going to be a long summer...

Your basic storefront and curtainwall has seen some increases in lead times, but not as much as what you are experiencing.
Lead times for curtainwall extrusions have increased dramatically. You won't get a slot with the extruder until Q1 2023.

Anyone have any insight into the details of why residential windows are taking so long right now?
It’s a real pane for many.

Just sold our house with a contingency to replace a couple windows. Lead time was 16 weeks so we had to close on the house, pay for the windows, then give the company the new homeowners contact information

not just windows. commercial wood doors are 5 months. hollow metal has gotten better though, but still about 4 months
You should see the lead times for 1600S250-97 (16 inch, 2-1/2" flange, 12GA) metal studs we had to order to frame a roof for a convenience store! On top of that, these things run nearly $20.00 per lin. ft. wholesale!

Then I don't know what to tell you. Demand is outpacing supply. It's pretty much that simple. I'm supplying more glass to my customers than I was pre-covid, but there's even more demand now. Window companies are operating as fast as they can, but when you receive two orders for every one order you complete, then lead times are obviously going to increase.
Yeah, it seems like new constructions and major home renovations have really taken off in the last couple of years.
My in-laws are currently renovating their house and they've experienced numerous delays relating to the shipment of their windows. It's super frustrating for them because that part is holding up the rest of the process.

Just had 9 windows replaced on my home. Ordered in September and was told 8-10 weeks to arrive. Called in December to get an ETA, and they still didn’t have them. They finally arrived at the end of February and were installed last week.

My site makes polymer that goes on as a coating on window frames and components among other things and we are making record numbers. Anderson windows is buying all we can produce so the supply is there, just the demand is huge.

It's just wild. I understand why construction and renovations were up during Covid since so many people were home.. but it blows my mind that it is still so high.
How are so many people even able to afford it? Life is quite expensive right now, and building a home/renovating a home is certainly considered to be a luxury.
