The movie theaters in my town (Lafayette) seem pretty dead most of the time. With all the streaming options available now, and new movies coming out on these platforms, will movie theaters close down for good across the country? I know we’re still in the pandemic and that has been the driving force here, but it just feels like the movie going experience has shifted from the cinema to home. Still can’t get that movies-quality popcorn at home though.

Everything is cyclical. Just like commercial real estate and office buildings are going to be a thing of the past. Not so fast. I’ve already seen articles about Teams and Zoom fatigue and how work from home has worn off its novelty.

I read something awhile back that talked about how movies are now available on streaming services the same time they are in theaters.. And that its just a trend to get people to sign up for these services.. And because if Covid 2020 was a bad year, this year will be just as bad and that 2022 will be bad years for movies, but 2023 and after will be when theaters will start to recover.

There are a lot of movies that were put on hold that all have pushed their open date back to sometime in 2023.

Outside of Avengers and Star Wars, how many good movies have there been in the past 5 years?

Many theaters were already struggling before COVID.

Theaters are an outdated model anyway. Movies can be sent directly to our homes now. I love the experience of going to a theater, but the writing is on the wall.

When was the last time you saw a big new movie released to theaters?

Used to love going to the show as well, but got tired of cell phones going off all movie long and people talking. Not to mention, movies are getting shitty every year...bad writing!

There will be fewer and you'll have to drive further to get to one, but there will still be a market, especially for kids movies.

Movie industry has killed itself.

People will get bored of having at least 10% gays, 1 trans, and every couple being interracial crammed down their throat. Especially when it is just gratuitous and not important to the story line.

No, they’re not. More Americans can use the exercise of getting their fat/lazy asses off their couches and doing things in public.

There is a market for everything. I think most will close, but a few will emerge and make a killing

I think they won't go away completely, but they will be a lot fewer of them.

10-15 screens per a million residents seems like a good number.

I’ve been to an actual movie theater ONCE in the last 3 years, when my nerd friends dragged me to see that ‘last’ Star Wars movie in December 2019.

I have no intention of ever going to an actual theater ever again, regardless of Covid.

You can get a 75 inch Samsung TV at home with incredible picture and a decent sound system all for an affordable price. The thing about the movie theater I will miss the least spending $50 at the concession stand for the popcorn and a couple of cokes

Read where John Schneider is opening a drive-in in Holden. Hopefully not 24/7 re-runs of Dukes of Hazzard.
