Not very familiar with Metro Detroit and potholes are you? I can see the urge to compare NOLA and Detroit but Detroit is a few deviations shittier than New Orleans.
Been there many times. Doesn’t have a French Quarter, sure. Audubon and City Park are.... pretty insignificant when you look at the fact that most of New Orleans looks like Haiti. Detroit is a dilapidated, dirty town, just like New Orleans. Similar homeless problem. Similar crime problem.
And I’m a former NOLA homer. But I got outside of the city and realized... there’s more out there.

The decline in New York over the past 5-6 years will accelerate massively. But places like New Orleans and Las Vegas that are entirely dependent on tourism will be hit even worse.
NOLA’s short term future looks really bad.

Never mind with telecommunting and remote work people for the first time can really decide where they want to live and not just base where they live off their work.
I will get downvoted for this, but I think this may end up being a net positive for NOLA.
Of course, this is dependent upon the soul/heart of the city not being gutted.
But look at this board. How many threads to we have, where people post, I want to live in LA, but I can't find a job? I want to live in NOLA, but I can make more money in Houston?
A lot of people WANT to live here. If job attachment is no longer an issue, that number will increase.
People who buy condos as weekend/second homes, may just decide to live here full time.
Now, the tourism/F&B industry? It's in bad shape. It's going to depend on how long they can hang on. A lot of these businesses were living on the margins in the best of times. F&B is not known for being well-managed, financially, and you are seeing that.
But people haven't forgotten how to cook, how to make a drink, how to play the drums. When this is over, there will be demand for them. You might see more out of town ownership, more corporate ownership.
But in the tourism / F&B industry, NOLA is a brand that sells. No one is going to put a McD in the marigny. Stop that.

I agree the Civil Unrest wasn't bad in NOLA this time around but with the city being majority black we all know that NOLA is still a Civil Rights powderkeg waiting to happen. To me that very much holds the city back.
Are you from NOLA?
NOLA has, very possibly, the BEST race relations of any majority-black city in the country. People of all colors know how to live together here. You don't have the racism that you see in cities that are majority white but have a large black population. And there are enough white people who live here, and who will continue to live here, to avoid the radical black power that places like Jackson, MS have to deal with.
Remember, pulling down 4 statues was caused by a WHITE man with white guilt. Most black residents here could have cared less. And despite having an outsider black mayor, there's barely any real talk about taking down any more statues. A few street names may be changed, sure, but that's hardly a powder keg.

. Raze Lakeside Mall and build an arena for the Pelicans there.
1) Lakeside Mall is one of the few successful malls currently operating, in the entire country.
2) Suburban arenas/stadiums don't work in today's world. That's old news. Everyone is moving back downtown for this stuff.

Until it’s the focus of an election year media frenzy.
Ask St Louis, Baton Rouge, Dallas, Baltimore, and Minneapolis about that. Everything is okay until there are 2,000 reporters in town and every talking head on the news is screaming “racism!”.

Why can't the dem mayor fix it?
Thats the most arse backward logic I've EVER read on here
you're talking about getting federal bailouts. how can Latoya "fix" that?

The tourism hit to NOLA would be bad enough if Destroyah weren’t intentionally making it worse through shutting down every major event for NOLA as well as making it unwieldy or impossible to come to the city and have fun.
People may be less likely to spend money anyway, similar to the Vegas tourism crash after the 2008 but Destroyah is making it so whoever does want to spend money won’t do it there.

Prices range based on a few things including whether you are Catholic and whether you are a parishioner of the church attached to that specific school.
Non-Catholics go to those schools but you are expected to either pay more or do a bunch of service to the school as part of tuition.

As a current NOLA resident and long-time former Chicago resident, we have it better here. Chicago is in far worse shape both short term, as a result of Covid and civil unrest, and long term, as a result of corruption and financial mismanagement.
I go back occasionally for work and things are seriously f***ed up there. I have a semblance of a normal life here, they do not in Chicago.

At least part of Chicago’s problem is total fiscal mismanagement like selling off profit centers for pennies, like the parking lot rights.

Yeah, Haiti actually had most of its abandoned structures destroyed

I think no having Mardi Gras this year will be impossible for the city to overcome the lack of revenue across all channels.

Is one of the most depressing places on Earth. I've been to New Orleans and Haiti. New Orleans has some nice areas. Haiti does not.

Bullish on tourism returning slowly starting this summer, but Orleans Parish cannot get out of it's own way in terms of diversifying its economy. No doubt about that.
I'm looking at houses outside of the parish too, as many friends are or have already done and acted on.
