Yep, they roam all over Kisatchie National Forest west and south of Alexandria. I've seen some before, and you come across hoof tracks and droppings all the time.

If you go to the ranges at Fort Polk you have to make sure its clear of horses before going hot and sending rounds downrange. The horses are all over the place there.

Pretty sure that's the ones that show up on 165 now and then.

Most of them were horses that were dropped off a few years ago when there was a drought going on and people couldn’t afford to feed them.
One of my cousins had horses,he went to bed one night with 3 horses in his pasture.Next morning he had 5 horses in his pasture.

I've been going to Leesville from Shreveport for over 20 years, and I usually exit at Natchitoches and take LA117 from Provencal to Leesville. I've seen wild horses through there at least 5 times if not more. It's really cool.

Way back when I was 17-18 years old (still had open range in Rapides Parish) there were several wild horses hanging out on our place, and several other farms in the area. A buddy and I started leaving feed in our "corral" so they wouldn't be spooked by it. After a couple weeks of de-spooking them we were able to close the gate on 17. We loaded them up in his dads stock trailer and took them to the sale barn in Ellick. IIRC we made $98 each selling our captured horses.
My moms comment .... "didn't know I raised a horse thief".

We did get a lot of "thank you" from other farm owners in the area for removing the nuisance.

There's a herd of wild horses around the Peason Ridge area of Kisachtie Forest.
I see em driving to my deer lease sometimes.... dont know anything about thier heritage.

Just curious, how smart are horses compared to dogs and other domesticated animals?

Depends on the horse. Some are evil genius level, others are as dumb as a box of rocks. The dumb ones are easier to deal with

When I was at Polk from 84-88 we would chase wild horses with APCs on Peason Ridge.

Not sure if it's the same group they mention in the article, but there is a small herd that shows up on the side of Hwy 165 between Woodworth and Ellick. That's about 45 miles ATCF from Peason Ridge WMA.

You can see them frequently throughout the year in Woodworth. They like to graze next to the road and sometimes end up in the empty grass lot next to Dollar General and behind the nursing home. Really beautiful animals.

I've seen the ones in Kisatchie along the Wild Azalea Trail. At least one of the six I saw was a gelding. So most likely escaped and joined whatever heard he found.
