Hi reader in the U.S., we're not trying to sell you anything this Tuesday; we're humbly asking for your support. It's a little awkward because we’re not salespeople. We’re librarians, archivists, and information junkies. We depend on donations averaging $16.36, but fewer than 1% of readers give. If you donate just $3, the price of your coffee this Tuesday, Wikipedia could keep thriving. Thank you.

Couldn't they find a better way to raise money?

It really is

Wiki got me through many BS electives in college and this was over a decade ago.

True, but if they had found a better way to do it, would they still be doing it?

If they rely solely on donations it gives them a better image of impartiality. If they plastered ads on their page or had corporate sponsors would you trust the wikipedia page on that sponsor?

Using a major website without ads is like driving down a major highway without billboards.

As much as I use Wikipedia I'm happy to toss a few bucks their way.
