Also have heard many male relatives who travel for work say the prettiest women on earth are in Louisiana.
Italy, California, and Brazil all blow Louisiana out of the water in this regard.

The south has very shitty customer service compared to places with different demographics. This really only applies to grocery stores, some restaurants, etc.
I know exactly what you're saying, but it depends on the level of customer service. And where it is. The demographic issue you reference is brutal here in Atlanta, not as bad in other places. You probably lose competence outside of Atlanta but gain a lot in pleasantness.
At higher levels, when I'm dealing with court clerks and law office paralegals and secretaries for my work, it's no contest, the folks down here are much, much better in large part.
I love dealing with rural Georgia clerks, for example. They may be a little dumb, but they'll truly do anything you want if you're nice.

Not sure why you find that so funny. Lets not get so literal here over a figure of speech "prettiest women on earth". My daddy had to spend 16 months in North Carolina & he said you'd see a pretty girl occasionally but in Louisiana a pretty girl is a dime a dozen.
Again, it's not necessarily a genetic thing as much as it is on how they take more pride in their appearance & presenting themselves in public. I went to training for a couple weeks both in Minnesota & Ohio and I couldn't believe all the women who went to work in stretchy elastic pants, messy hair and no make up. I was raised to fix myself up even if just running to the store. True story... my mawmaw was in her 80s when she died and I can't recall ever seeing her without make up and her hair all done.

Why would anyone willingly live up north?
There would have to be a dang good reason.

It's very different, for males and females. Mid-Atlantic middle class folks look like slobs compared to middle class people in the Southeast. Obviously the high end is a lot higher up there, but in my experience our homes are kept much nicer, appearance is far more important, pleasantries and socialization are higher priority, etc.

I actually prefer a women's natural beauty....make up is a turn off for me

Depends where in California. I spent a summer in Bakersfield & LA area. The women were aged horribly. Very dry wrinkled skin. Looked rode hard by 40 yrs old.

I normally think of the North as the Great Lakes and Northern Plains. As a Minnesota native, the east is the east, and the True North is very different than the east.
If you don't like winter, well, yeah you won't like the north. I only go back up when the lakes aren't able to be driven on.
This is pretty spot on. I always read posts on here about "The North" and that is equated with NYC, Boston, etc. That isn't the north, that's the northeast. The True North is in Minnesota, North Dakota, and into Wisconsin. It has to be north of the Twin Cities metro area. People from the area above an artificial line drawn from Fargo, through Brainerd, across to Duluth, laugh if you refer to the Twin Cities metro as "Up North". Let's not even get into people from Canada. Talking to people from Winnipeg, those people from Manitoba pride themselves on being from the "True North".
The best time to be up here is when you CAN drive on the lakes. Here in SoDak, in the lakes regions, the ice is 24-27 inches thick and not a whole lot of snow. Perfect for pulling the permie on the lake for a weekend of ice fishing.
If you don't like the winter you won't like it up here but there is a lot to do during the winter: ice fishing, ice skating, outdoor pond hockey, snowmobiling, skiing (cross country, even some downhill), sledding.
I love it up here and couldn't give up winter but maybe I'm just a bit strange that way. In fact, when I retire our plans are to move further north, probably Twin Cities area over by Stillwater and the St. Croix Valley, but possibly to the Duluth area. Brainerd would be nice too.

I understand what you're trying to say regarding natural look. Reality is zero make up is rarely "pretty". The key is to apply your make up with a natural look (powder, little blush on your cheeks, lip gloss) instead of looking like a clown whore.

I also forgot to add another answer to the original question posed in the title.
Why live up North?
Because walleye fishing is better than bass fishing...and we have both up here.

Exactly. Slobby is a perfect description. I would never dream of going to work or out in public looking like a slob.

I remember in college being told that me and my buddies from Auburn were "much better put together than the guys around here." But those were Chalmette girls, so...
But it's more than just NOLA. All southern cities are like that, and most suburbs too. We're not all Charleston, but even the non-southern Atlanta transplants dress much better in my experience than their northern counterparts.

I wouldn't unless I was with someone that got orders to.
Posted on 1/27/15 at 10:43 am to Pettifogger
I would have to disagree with you there. People in Boston tend to dress really well. I dress like a person from the south would and I'm consistently the most underdressed when we go somewhere.

You aren't paying for the property - you're paying for great neighbors.
I get that. And I love having well-to-do, educated neighbors. I leave my door unlocked more times than not. I guess I'm just used to it (lived in NW Washington, Germnay, and Bahrain before this. The cost per square foot just doesn't seem worth it. And I'm accustomed to high housing costs.

Average household income in my area is around $140k. Average.
Therein lies the problem. I bet the area is super great if you're on the upper end of that, but I'm single and just crack 100K. That's enough to get comfortably into a 1BR spending well over a third of my take-home on housing.
I'm 32 and just feel like I'm out of that 700sqft phase. That's smaller than my first apartment was.

Yeah, actually it is [that fricking nice]
Yes it's nice. No it's not nice enough for me to be comfortable in a place that won't fit a quarter of my furniture once I get it out of storage.

It's not just the clothing. Im a jeans, under armour, casual dresser in general. My dad doesnt own anything but Levi's, yet he's still well groomed and doesnt look "sloppy". Same here, even at my most casual in public, I fix my hair, have a lil make up, etc.

My experience is different, and like you, deals primarily w/ Boston folks. A recent example was a graduation I went to where a few kids from Boston were graduating and their fairly well to do families came down. The were by far the most underdressed of everyone there. It was just odd.
I know that's anecdotal, but it's similar to my experiences w/ folks from the region. Now don't get me wrong, I'm an attorney and when I am up there and with other attorneys, they dress normally. But for casual or business casual events, the difference has been stark for me.
