They were never aiming for the White House. Not sure where you heard they couldn't find the white House, but that's not accurate. It was always the Pentagon.
You have to remember members of Al-Queda only know of things in the United States from tv, magazines and so on. To them they see the United States as symbols such as the WTC, Pentagon and Capital building.

Hitting the Pentagon was less about creating massive damage than in the simple fact they could strike the heart of the US military establishment.

I believe the Capital was the target of the 4th and not the WH. Maybe I have too much residual from reading Debt of Honor back in the day, but the US Capital would have been my #1 target over the other 3. They could have been saving that one for last for that purpose.
Going with the attack on the heads of military, financial and government makes sense, however true fear factor was lost on the Pentagon. That was back during a time the military was not loved as it is today. We were coming off the many years of base closures and why do we need a large military anyways thought. The Cold War was wrapped up and we were a decade removed from Iraq.
Putting 2 planes into the capital would have been a larger FU to America.

And then the photographers were there in the middle east to show the children there celebrating. (I was at a friends' house and she home schooled her daughters. Her early teenaged daughters were shocked at the children celebrating- it was their loss of innocence.)

A crop duster would be even easier. There are plenty of them, highly maneuverable and even loaded with just water would cause hundreds to be stampeded trying to get out. Then until it was determined to just be water the hospitals would be overwhelmed.
Thats a huge problem for just a few bucks and one dude.

If they can lob mortars and fire rockets using Google Earth, I'm sure they could navigate at a plane into the WH.

Yeah do people not understand the thousands of pounds of jet fuel that leaked all up and down the elevator shafts of the towers? You had impact between floor 93 and 99 on the north tower and fuel leak all the way down and blow out floor 22.

not sure on fifth plane but there was a 20th terrorist that didnt make it into the country. Something about them being suspicious of him making it here on so little money. so he was sent back, but the other 19 had no issues waltzing into our country and taking flight lessons without a fricking visa.

ABC News (Peter Jennings) reported that morning of a car bomb at the Capitol Building. Makes you wonder who the hell called in the wrong piece of information.

Another guy who helped organize 9/11 and was in contact with hijackers said in 2002 that the target was the White House.

Either the White House or the Capital Building. Those were the targets decided on by OBL, another guy who originated the idea, and Atta (spelling?) who was one of the 19 killers. All this is documented in 911 report from documents and such.
Targets were all symbolic, addressing capitalism/materialism, the government and the military.

({Rumsfeld}LINK Rumsfeld the day prior mentioned the 2 trillon the pentagon couldn't vouch for. The area hit was the accounting department.
